City Hails Heritage At Founder’s Day

MAY — Tbe city’s Dutch heritage will be celebrated Saturday, honoring Capt. Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, the Dutch sea captain and Dutch WesUiKlia Company and arrived on the shores of New Jersey in 1621, claiming them for Holland. So impressed was Capt.

Mey with the beauty and potential of the land that he bestowed his name upon it, and so in his honor the City of Cape May celebrates Founder’s Day each September. Ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. with a memorial service and the laying of a wreath at the monument to

The 1963 Tulip Queen, Anne Reagan, and her court, will be on hand, and band music will be provided for entertainment by Nabb Leslie Seniors American Legion State Champion Band from Millville. FOUNDERS DAY is scheduled in September to kick off the tulip bulb sales sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and Planting Chairman Harry Lozour will be on hand with thousands of bulbs for sale to city residents to beautify the springtime streets. As in the past, a variety of colors will be available, at very reasonable costs. Lozour reiminds residents that masses of bulbs planted together create the most impact. The tulip planting committee (rf the Chamber of Commerce plans to plant more tulip bulbs on Washington Street Mall this fall to replace the ones that were “drowned” by the heavy spring rain this year. City residents are urged to plant tulip bulbs this fall, especially along the main arteries into town, Washington, Lafayette, and West Perry Sts., to greet visitors with masses of springtime blooms. Tulip bulbs may be purchased 1 to 4 p.m. during Capt. Mey’s Day Sept. 24 from Lozour, or by mail or in person at Captain Mey’s Inn, 202 Ocean St., or at the Dellas Agency, Decatur St., throughout the fall. Aid Offered On Planting COURT HOUSE - Seashore plantings have been hit hard by this summer’s drought following the unusually/heavy rainfall of March'and April, says Larry E. Newbold, county agricultural agent. Newbold suggests that seashore gardeners obtain a free copy of the new booklet. Landscaping at the Seashore, available by calling the County Extension Service, 465-5115. The booklet goes into detail about seashore landscaping problems and solutions, and lists plants that will survive under seashore conditions.
