CAL Cross Country Title Competition Is Wide Open

SULLER’S HARDWARE 136 E. WILDWOOD AVENUE WILDWOOD 522-1418

The new set-up in the Cape Atlantic League has made for more interesting races in high school sports this fall and none more than in boys’ cross country competition. With Ocean City moving to CAL II, it’s now a wide open race in the

CALI

Wildwood Catholic, under.coach John Malinowski, appears to be ready for the challenge. Malinowski lost three top runners from last year’s 21-3 team but new hopes now lie with Paul Koch, Marty Morcolongo and Jim Malinowski. Wildwood placed three runners in the top seven of the CAL ! last season but only one is returning. Eo*;s Huffnagle is the returning letterman leading the Warriors in this’ wide open league race. Coach Jim Emory is hoping for only a ' .500 season but coaches naturally are a bit reserved.

Ocean City will find the competition tougher in the CAL II but a championship team from 1962 was great experience for returning runners Paul lannace. Bob Bond, Gary' Brophy, all juniors, and seniors .Dave Hadtke and Cliff Schlachter. Back in the CAL II, Lower Cape May and Middle Township don’t appear to have the horses to challenge this year. GIRL’S CROSS COUNTRY will see Ocean City looking to defend its title from a year ago. Melody Sye leads the squad, which posted a 19-1 slate last fall. Kim Zsitkovsky, a top CAL selection last season running for Wildwood, is the top hope for Warrior title this year. The team lost only j)ne«runner to graduation. Look for Ocean City and Bridgeton to battle it out

In girl’s tennis action from last week. Lower Cape May posted its first win of the young season with a 5-0 shutout of Wildwood Catholic. Jim Coldred, Jim Escher and Margaret Kelly all took straight sets wins in singles .competition. Laura Mossbrook of Court House ran her record to 3 and 0 in leading Holy Spirit to a 5-love whitewashing of Bridgeton. Mossbrook downed Jody Nocera t4, 6-0 in the win.

FALL IS a great time to play a little golf. Just ask Avalon’s BUI Marshall. Marshall finished second in the Philadephia Open Senior Amateur Championship at the Walnut Lane Golf Club. Marshall fired a 71 to finish just two strokes

off the pace.

At the September Tourney for the Ocean City Amateur Golfing Association, BUI KiUredge was the winner. George Rumer finished second and MUt HUes took third. The tournament was held at HoUy

Hills.

The Cape May County Junior Football League got under way last weekend and Upper Township hopes the 1963 season will be as good as last year’s. The Indians hope to regain the Midget title while the Wan riors have sights set on wearing the Peewee crown again. Quarterback Dave Southard and fullback Morris Fitzpatrick, up from the Warriors, should provide power to the already strong Midget club. VoUeybaU is set to get

MARKERS: TIME to have fun. Baseball is winding down too fast and the National League East looks like a checkers game. Teams continue to jump over each

other into first place and it seems that no body wants the honor for long. Who will win? I’m sticking to my guns and will say Montreal, although the Phillies are inconsistent enough to mess it up. And maybe win it. In the American League, the Chicago White Sox clinched too early and will fall to Baltimore as the Orioles should be sharp at playoff

time.

Football is really not on my mind yet but early thoughts had the New York Jets winning the A.F.C. That was until the Seattle Seahawks dumped them behind Curt Warner. Penn

Stale wishes they had him back. Speaking of the Nittany Lions, what about college football? The luck of the Irish is well overdue. Notre Dame, riding an easy schedule, should make a move on Nebraska for the national title. Orange Bowl match-up, the Irish and Cornhuskers. And finally, what about these America Cup Races! No one seems to give a. darn about sailing until the U.S. has to take on the world. Remember the U.S.-U.S.S.R. hockey rlnsh in the Olympics? Well, I guess I do believe in

miracles.
