ISN’T OCTOBER GRAND? It's autumn alright, no doubt about it. Time to get ready for winter — no doubt about that, either. It’s time to get the sweaters out of the garment bag in the attic. It’s time to get the storm windows up. It’s time to get out the blankets. Also, start stacking the firewood. .• e e Plants and animals are at it, too. They are getting ready, each in its own way, for the coming of the cold and snow. Not only the trees, but all the other plants of our streets and yaxls, parks and roadsides, fields and forests are getting ready for winter. They are all ripening their seeds and fruits, and the bushes and trees are finishing those new layers of wood and bark, — a new layer of wood just outside the layer made last year. In these layers a lot of food is being stored for use next spring when the growing season will come again. All of this work will be closing in a blaze of color. We’ll be seeing it from now on. We are in toe midst of a vast movement of bird life this week because thousands and thousands of each kind are flying southward. The Audubon Society folks will be in town this weekend, with binoculars and cameras on tripods in place. The Atlantic Flyway will be a busy, busy place this week. Suggest you take a look for yourself and enjoy the autumn panorama as well. * * * When it comes to enjoying one’s self, here’s a list of some of our favorite places: MONTREAL RESTAURANT — always popular. Reservations are a good idea. Call 884-7011. \ HERALD’S INN — see the sports!
