The Wildwoods Charles V. Mathis
(From PAge 38) “Welcome, Sea Gulls. Glad That You're Here." Shamrock bistro owner Pat Ward now refers to Pacific Avenue as the “sea gull's landing strip." Although we don’t turn off the lighthouses, joyous natives adverse to tourist trade chortle happily about shooting a cannon off down any street without fear of hitting a living or moving object. • • • To mark the anniversary of localite Grace Kelly'a death (she spent all or part of the past 54 summers in Cape May and Ocean City) KYW-TV encored NBC’s 1979 “Big Event" speical in which Lee Grant interviewed Princess Grace. Program retained 90-minute length, but editing allowed insertion of updates ' in which station's Trudy Haynes interviewed Grace's brother. John B, Kelly Jr, at the Kelly’s Ocean City home. Before Ocean City, the Princess vacationed at Cape May’s late, lamented Windsor Hotel. * • • • SQUID HAVE a life cycle of 17 to 24 months and local commercial fishermen apparently missed the peak catches this season. Regarded as' a delicacy abroad, they are also very popular at island Italian restaurants. Commercial fishermen who live on a diet of hard work and hope, without local, state nor national aid, afe accustomed to disappointments, however. Many of the 100 draggers who fed the nine factory ships were from Lund's,
Cape May. The ships were from Spain, Italy. Portugal and Japan. Some area boats are working on illex, or short-finned squid, in deeper water off Cape May county. Transferring squid from antiquated U.S. boats to a foreign processing ship is a relatively qihck and efficient process. (The Cape boat shackles a detachable cod end full of squid to a nylon or wire hawser, which is sent to the ship via a buoyed messenger line. It takes about 10 minutes. Without the joint fac- ’ toryship venture, U.S. fishermen would be back to a 15 cents per lb. squid deal. This season, area fishermen received 30 to 40 cents per lb. guaranteed, according to size American-caught, squid, was once spurned by domestic buyers and processors. Let your legislators know you’d like Uncle Sam to unravel his latest ball of red tape surrounding the squid fishery. Syndicated columnist Lit Smith interviewed Jackie Onassis in New York The world's most famous woman confided, “l hated to put shoes on again after a month's vacation in Martha’s Vineyard.” Does that strike a nerve ending, Jersey Cape folks? ' • • • Our Governor has signed a bill that makes the driver of a moving vehicle responsible if there is litter thrown from it onto the highway. Stiff fines are from $100 to $500. Bravo, but how's about the driver who empties the car ash trays in your gutter?
