Middle Still Winless; OG Wins, Lower Ties

Week number two in high school football action proved to be very tough on tfte Middle Township Panthers. The undefeated Hammonton Blue Devils took advantage of several Panther miscues to win 16 to 6. Rainy skies made for slippery conditions that affected both teams. The Blue Devil defense recovered a fumble ' on their own two-yard line to halt a drive and Panther, quarterback Rob Hicks had a pass picked off to kill another key drive. Middle's only score came on a two-yard plunge by running back Tim Edwards. Edwards rushed for 115 yards on the afternoon, carrying the pigskin 17 times.; With the loss, the Panthers fall to 0-2 on the season. At Ocean City, tailback Jonathon Dice rolled up 194 yards on the ground as the Red Raiders thumped Mainland 28-0. Dice scored on runs of five and 76 yards and contributed four PAT’a. Senior tight end Brian Green scored an unusual TD as he jumped on a Dice fumble in the end zone. Ocean City improved its record to 1 and l in Division II with the victory. This week the Raiders invade Cumberland. The Lower Cape May Capers Tigers did battle with Buena on the road Saturday and forgot to bring the offense along. Lower battled Buena to an 0-0 standoff. Wilwood took the week off in preparation for Hammonton this week. THE VERY BEST cross country runners got

OX. had'little trouble picking up the win. Gene Watts and Cliff Schlachter led the way for the undefeated Red Raiders. Wildwood evened their record at 2-2 with Ross Hoffnagel finishing second in the meet. • • • WILDWOOD CATHOLIC had a chance to see South Jersey’s very best soccer player last week. nephew-uncle team of Lou and Lewis Pace by 4 and 3. The event was held at the Wildwood Golf and Country Club. • • • MARKERS: Time for some fun. With the playoffs in baseball now under way, something has to be said about the Phillies and Tug McGraw. The Tugger told the Phils top brass that he should be one of the guys not on the"active roster for the post-season gettogether. What class. He knew his role with the club was insignicant and stepped aside for the better of the team. It must have hurt deep down. Tomorrow marks the beginning of' the N.H.L. season. That’s right, it’s here already The Flyers played their last preseason contest in Atlantic City and I don’t think things will' change all that much from last season. . If some of the Vets’ see less time on the ice as the season winds down, maybe the flyers will not fall on their faces come playoff time. Next to get under way, basketball. I’m really looking forward to that It should be fun watching the Sixers repeat as champs. Cy Young award? Well I think Lamarr Hoyt will get it in the American League, but Scott McGregor should. John Denny,' without a doubt, in the N.L.
