Fishing on Hold, Hunting to Start
The effect of tropical storm Dean on the fishing on the Jersey-Coast has yet to be appraised We know that prior to the arrival of the disturbance, fishing had been the best it has been in years for this time of year Surf fishing was producing kingfish. snapi per blues, and occasional weakfish Jetty fishermen were catching some fluke, weaks. blues and kings Boat fisherman were catching weakfish, blu&fish.
fluke and a scattering of other fish along the coast close to the inlets and in the mouth of the Delaware Bay Further offshore, sea bass, ling and porgies had moved onto the wrecks and the prospect was for ling, cod and pollock to arrive with colder weather. Albacore, bonito and bluefish were being caught by the offshore troUers and' the night Chummers were scoring well on slammer blues Sharks, including

The question which will come in the aftermath of the Storm and the time it takes to get the ocean settled ' down again will be determined by the anglers who will start searching out the fishing. Only time will tell. Meanwhile, on to other things. Thursday’s high .tides reminded us that ■when the meadows are covered as they were, they are ideal for marsh bird hunting. Railbirds are not as plentiful as they once were, but either are the rail bird hunters Railbirds are erratic flyers which live in the grasses and reeds on the meadows between the mainland and the resorts, on the barrier islands. They are hunted from

boats or by wading the flats. In either case, hunters pursue the railbirds by waiting for the tides to cover the meadows until only small amounts of stubble and grass appear over the water. Birds then concentrate in those areas. WHEN THE HUNTER either moves his boat through the grass or wades through, the birds flush and fly. Usually, one hunter poles the boat through the reeds and the other sits or stands in the bow and shoots. Unless you're hunting with a paid guide, the hunters usually switch positions in some kind of schedule. The more intrepid hunters we know wade the flats on high tide. They wear sneakers, jeans or shorts, a long-sleeved shirt and a life preserver, of one kind or another. As they wade', of course, they locate ditches and creeks and when they are in water in which their feet cannot reach the bottom, the preserver holds them up and they kick-paddle to the next flat area. While it may sound like cold sport, the water is usually warm and if you pick your days, the air is also warm enough to be comfortable. We do not suggest you try it without having surveyed the areas where you plan to wade so you can avoid sudden surprises like deep flowing channels, or muddy areas By all means do not wade alone. For the more sane of the mud lien hunters, boats are the way to go. Those flat bottomed skiffs of a bygone era were best. They were stable and drew little water, -'they slid over the marshes in relatively litfle water when prodded by a push pole Rail bird shooting is a challenging sport because the birds .are ungainly, erratic flyers. They come up suddenly and dip and dive enough to make shooting difficult. If you ever do try . railbird hunting, make sure you mark downed birds and retrieve those you drop. Our favorite

The New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife announces it intends to enforce the steel shot law when the season opens Oct. 29. A significant increase in lead poisoning deaths of black ducks in certain areas has led to the intensified enforcement effort. Persons convicted of us-

datory $20 fine for each shotgun shell other than steel shot shells in possession. The steel shot area is bounded by the Shark River on the north, the Garden State Parkway on the west, the Cape May canal on the south and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. In this designated area only shotgun shells containing BB shot or smaller steel pellets will be permitted to be used for hunting waterfowl. It must be emphasized that possession of lead shot or lead pellets in the designated area is illegal after the waterfowl season begins Oct. 29 THE COASTAL waterfowl season opens Oct. 29 and closes Nov. 5. It reopens Nov. 23 and closes Jan. 3, 1984. How the steel shot law affect upland game hunters was not ex-
plained in the material from the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, but we will report that part of the steel shot controversy in an •upcoming column. For specific information concerning steel shot regulations, consult the migratory bird, supplement which is available from licensing agents Archery season for deer opened. Early reports indicate there are plenty of deer around. The warm pre-season weather has kept foliage on the trees and woods visibility will be low. Hunters may face more insects such as mosquitoes, ticks and chiggers in the early season. Guard against these pests. Don’t forget to. report your deer and also make sure you track any deer you shoot at and/or hit. Don't waste game. It is a valuable commodity.
