• FOLSofa - The NAACP and South Jersey Gas Co. have signed an agreement which recognizes the vital role black Americans have in the growth of the com pany ’s service area and af firms the gas utility’s efforts of providing business and economic oppor-. ^unities to all persons within the scope of its operations y Dr. Benjamin Hoolur National NAACP executive director, William F Ryan, president and chief executive officer of South Jersey Gas Co.; and Irene HiH-Smith, president of the NAACP State Conference, signefl the agreement, which pledged cooperation to explore mutually agreeable ways to expand
economic opportunities for blacks • "•* ; THE AGREEMENT., en titled "Declaration of Support For Minority Business and Employment Oppor turn ties," specifically calls for South Jersey Gas to continue activities promotiong minority opportunities as well as initiate new programs which are practical and feasible to implement a minority purchasing program; provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants; review philanthropic activities to insure reasonable support for worthy minority organizations, and insure minority represehtation at the policy level of the company.
Commenting on the benefits to be realized by this agreement, Ryan said, "High unemployment is a particular problem among minority groups, even in a growth economy; definitive actions through such programs as our minority purchasing program are intended to deal specifically with high unemployment among minority groups." "South Jersey Gas Co. has pursued an active affirmative action program since the 1960’s,” according to - SJG’s President Ryan. "During the period from 1972 to 1982," Ryan continued, “the Company has increased its minority workforce from 7.6 percent to 13.0 percent of its 500
employees" V. "THE COMPANY also has minority representa tion bn its Board of Directors," Ryan Said, "Dr. Shirli M. Vioni, former superintendent of the Pleasantville, N.J., public school district and currently superintendent of schools of Wayzata, Minn, has been a member of our board since January of this year.
"In order to -facilitate and aid in achieving the company's stated goals, the agreement calls for both organizations to meet semi-annually; at the same time, exploring' other interests and programs of mutual benefit.”
