MILLVILLE - Christopher H. Riley, Democratic candidate for State Senate, District 1, has criticized Republican' Incumbent Sen. James Hurley for his recent opposition to legislation to attract more qualified math and science specialists into teaching in New Jersey schools. The bill, Riley said at a dinner of 'the Cumberland County School Boards, would provide student loans of up to $12,500 to math and science majors who then teach in New Jersey schools for at least six years. Riley criticized Hurley’s absence >.at the dinner, despite his invitation. •‘RUNNING AGAINST an empty chair is frustrating," Riley said. “Hiere-are so many questions I would like to ask my opponent. Tam sure that’s why the chair is empty.” Riley stated that the legislation is designed to attract high-technology industries to New Jersey as well as to provide qualified math and science teachers for the schools. “New Jersey can only attract such industry and proride jobs for young adults if they have been welltrained. Right now we have a shortage of qualified math and science teachers because they keep getting scooped'up by high-paying private industry. “Senator Hurley seems to think th^t New Jersey can delay in ’ improving educabon just as he has shown in the past that he thinks New Jerwey can cut school funding. I disagree,’’ Riley said.
