Gamblers sleep all day and play all night.” When Charles MasciaieUa was mayor, Boardwalk cleanliness was a top issue. He.arranged installation of a strip of wire from the last rung of the ’walk railing to the wooden wa^Thus, much of the litter generated by a handful of careless ’walk merchants never made its way to the pristine clean beach sands. But alas and alack, he’s been out of office for some time and now as the wire rusts, it is not replaced. It can’t be that costly, and replacement might help center island to better achieve the litter-free look of North Wildwood. Perhaps as the new council tends to better housekeeping of the existing Boardwalk, taxpayers might be enticed to approve any proposed extensions. Rich Hinke has been service wine tender for Neil’s for nine years. When he packs away his apron and taps next month, Hinke will be heading for his 33rd winter in Acapulco, Mexico. Even before the devalued peso, Mexico was always the biggest vacation bargain in the world, according to Hinke. Like most residents, Hinke is concerned with early expansion of convention hall. If feasible, he believes the new high rise toll bridges at Rio Grande and North Wildwood might be the answer with tolls allocated to the hall. Ocean Drive bridges have charged tolls since 1940 with few complaints. James H. R. Cromwell, then husband of Doris Duke, christened the bridges. At the time, Ms. Duke was reputed to be the richest woman in the, world. Since then, there has been a toll increase of five cents. For 44 years, the state's smallest county has had the state’s largest number of toll bridges, so a couple more probably wouldn’t matter! Signs of the times: Johnnie’s, a landmark, seamark oasis for eons, has closed for the first time in 26 years. Economics is given as the reason. John Caterini owns Johnnie’s as well as Midtown Lounge. When he owned the Riptide, he brought stars like Wayne Newton, Diana Ross and the Supremes and Ray Charles to the island. DAVE ELSEY, of Villas, has starred for six season in an Elvis show at Pier
