Sounds BY CHARLES P. LAMEY

The Moody Blues’ new album, The Present (Polygram) will certainly please their fans. It’s another collection of heavily arranged, melodic softrock. Like all their previous albums, this one will never offend, just pacify. The Moody Blues never take chances. They found a successful formula many years ago and are content to milk it until they’re ready to retire. The Present, with its use of multi-layered keyboards, lilting melodies, and smooth vocals will surely dominate FM rock stations this fall. The new Hollies album features the reUirn of former founding member Graham Nash. Unfortunately, What Goes Around (Atlantic) lacks the punch' drive and excitement The Hollies are usually capable of. I don’t want to put all the blame on Nash, but this album is flat, unexciting, and doesn't come close to living up to the standards The Hollies have previously set. Sure, their harmonies are wonderful to hear, but when the playing is unemotional and the selection of material weak even that isn't enough to make this worth a listen. Skip this mess and pick up the reunion of The Animals. Johnny Copeland is a fine Texas blues musician, who has been rapidly expanding his cult audience. His new album Make My Home Where I Hang My Hat (Rounder, l Camp St. Cambridge, MA. 02140) is another strong collection. Copeland has a strong voice that's full of personality and as a guitarist his^tyle can be both dominating and subtle. Blues fans are in for a treat when they hear the music of Johnny Copeland.
