As we mQve along with fall sports here in Cape May County, one tends to overlook the vast amount of sports being played and to talk only about football. Well, this week let’s see bow other local athletes are doing. The fastest growing sport in the county and around the country for that matter, appears to be soccer. The game is being played on all levels and the high school game is really coming along. Middle Township, coming off its biggest win a little while back, over Millville, had a much easier game against St. Augustine last week and played like it was tougher, ft was simply a case of looking past an opponent to get on to another The hometown Hermits built up a 2-0 advantage before the Panthers caught fire. Kevin MacFarlane got the scoring under way in the third period and teammate Mike Donovan scored less than three minutes later. Tim Rpmig got the game winner in the fourth stanza as the Panthers erased the upset bid with a 3 to 2 victory'. In other action, Keating Weinberger netted two goals to lead Lower Cape May past Wildwood Catholic 3-0. Weinberger scored both goals in the third period and Rob Bailey picked up the third in the fourth: Later id-the week the Caper Tigers lost to Absegami 2 to 1 with .. John Girgenti scoring the lone goal. Middle Township held Glenn Carbonara of Vineland to just one goal, but still lost to the South Jersey power 4-0. Middle was out-shot in the contest 32-13. DEFENSE was the name of the game in girl's field hockey last week as two Cape May County teams found it hard to score. Middle Township took just three shots at the goal in a 6-0 blasting by St. Joseph. The Panthers did flot get past the St. Joe defense at .all in the first

half. High scorer Doobie Caprio ran her season total to 12 with four goals against Middle. Hammonton and Lower Cape May played to a 0-0 tie in other Division II action. Tigers' goalie Kerri Obermeyer stopped 15 shots on the net. In Ocean City, Forward Sue North scored twice in the second half to lead the Red Raiders past Mainland by a score of 2 to 1. The victory was first for O.C. IT REALLY IS NOT the season to play tennis but the girls are, and some with great results. Laura Mossbrook of Court Hou$e remained undefeated last week as she breezed past Ann Lawrenson. In the process, Mossbrook's Holy Spirit team won easily 5-0 over Oakcrest. Lower Cape May also Had an easy time, downing Hammonton 4-1 on the hard courts. Jill Escher and Margaret Kelly were singles winners and the teams of Karen SmithVicky King and Mandy Gack-Kelli Weeks took the doubles. Ocean City downed Mainland 3-2 in a close match that saw Mainland win the doubles and O.C. the singles. The Red Raider winners were Audrey Kemenosh, Dana Decinque and Linda King. In other matches’ last week, Wildwood Catholic used a forfeit in the second doubles match to better Hammonton 3-2 and Tracy Yarborough lead Lower past Middle, the score there also 3 to 2. IF YOU’RE LOOKING for a lot of points in the Cape May County Junior Football League, forget it. _As of last week, three dif"ferent teams were unscored-upon. Besides a safety given up by Lower Cape, the defense of Upper Townshp, Lower Township as well as Lower Cape has not allowed anyone to penetrate the end zone. In head-to-head play, Upper and Lower Cape battled to a Q-0 tie. For the little guys, defense is truly the name of the game. ON THE MARK: Time for some fun. Speaking of defense,

have you been watching baseball lately? Runs are hard to come by. Good pitching beats good hitting any day and is happening every day. The teams that made the playoffs this year may just have the top four staffs around. Hockey is under way, if anyone really cares until baseball is over. The Flyers looked great in their opener against the Washington Capitols. They made some interesting changes, like the Phillies did last winter, and maybe they will get the same results. More later. The Sixers took 15 players into Atlantic City last week and can only

carry 12 come regular season time. Look for Leo Rautins to become the only new face on the roster. However, the battle between free-agent Oliver Mack and Reggie Johnson could go either way. Earl Cureton, now playing in Italy, is the only player missing from the World Championship team. • • • In high school football action Saturday, Middle Township was the only local winner, topping Absegami, 6-0. WiWwood lost to Hammonton, 20-14, Lower Cape May fell to St. Joseph, 23-13, and Ocean City was edged by Cumberland, 12-9.
