Voll, Leusner Ratify 2 Hired by Peterson

COURT HOUSE - Middle Township Committee last week ratified the hiring of two men for its Roads Department who had omitted information from their job applications The unanimous decision was made at a work session Oct. 5 after an hour-long p\i b 1 i.c discussion highlighted by bitter political charges. Kept on the job with fourmonth probationary periods were Robert Vitola, 20, and Joseph McCarraher, 21, both, of Rio Grande. > Both had been hired unilaterally by committee member Patricia Peterson, who is seeking reelection next month. Vitola had failed to report his last employer. Harbor Furniture. He said he “completely forgot it." He agreed to provide a doctor’s certificate that he was recovered from a leg injury suffered on that job. McCarraher had failed to report a conviction for burglary-theft last year. He said he did that upon the advice of Peterson, who filled in his application for him. He agreed to resubmit an application acknowledging the arrest. The resolution hiring Vitola sailed through with little discussion after he agreed to produce the doctor's certificate. But the resolution hiring McCarraher appeared certaitt. A 2-1 defeat. Mayor Michael Voll, who seconded Peterson’sresolution, to bring it to a vote had voted no. And committee member Charles Leusner was halfway through a statement explaining why he would vote no. "Isn’t there any way around this?" 'Voll asked Solicitor Bruce M. Gorman. Gorman suggested a new application from McCarraher "to be judged on the mertis.” Gorman pointed out earlier that Peterson had

ignored his instructions that the committee had to hire by a resolution voted upon by all three members. "I thought everybody understood that,” he said. "That puts control of all departments in the hands of the majority,” object Peterson. During the heated discussion prior to the vote, Peterson charged Voll was “just picking on my department." “I-havethe right to check out anybody we’re going to hire," said Voll. "No you don’t,” said Peterson. “Yes I do," said Voll. "No you don’t,” said Peterson. “I would like to see your personnel file from the Wildwood Police Department after 11 years,” she said to Voll. “That’s none of your business," said Vqll. “Neither is this,” said Peterson. “Yes it is,” said Voll. "I’m their employer.” Voll and Leusner insisted

that their concerns stemmed from the job applicants' failure to give honest information. Peterson charged they had no similar doubts when they hired two applicants for the Police Department who incorrectly reported local addresses.
