Brennan Brisk as Lower Mauls Middle, 16-6
Fireworks in Erma this past Saturday as a couple of local high school teams booked up. Sean Brennan thrilled the crowd with an 80-yard punt return for a touchdown in a game which saw Lower Cape May down Middle Township by a 16-6
count.
Brennan later added to the show by tossing a 37-yard scoring strike to John Porter. Not to be outdone, the Panthers had a little excitement themselves. They took the lead early on a fantastic punt return by Robert Jones. Jones weaved his way some 65-yards to paydirt in the first quarter. Wildwood should have stayed home last week. The Warriors traveled to Mays Landing to take on Oakcrest, but were sent home with a thrashing. The Falcons ran up 401 total yards in a 45-6 win over Wildwood. Ocean City scored all its City Slates Scuba Class CAPE MAY — A class in Scuba is being offered by the City of Cape May as part of the the fall recreation schedule. IN HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER last week, Middle Township scored late and often to overpower Cumberland by the score of 7 to 2. With the game tied at one in the second period, the Panthers scored twice to break it open. Middle got two-goal performances from Kevin McFarlane and Mike Donovan. Wildwood Catholic used a great defense to shut out rival Sacred Heart 2-0. Pat Dwyer and Keith King scored goals as the Crusaders registered their first victory of the season. Lower Cape May ran up against a buzz saw qalled Holy Spirit. The 9 and 1 Spartans thrashed the outmanned Tigers by a 9-0 count. Bill Gallagher knocked in the lone goal in the second period to lead Ocean City to a 1-0 win over Egg Harbor Township. Gallagher's goal came in the second period.
SCORING GOALS seems to be Wildwood Catholic’s problem on the hockey field this season. The Crusaders are, however, playing good defense. Last wee W.C. held Middle Township scoreless, but failed to net a tally in a 0-0 tie. Goalie Kelly Gallagher stopped five shots in recording the shutout for Catholic and Carole Coles minded the nets for the Panthers. Rivals Ocean City and Atlantic City squared off on the hockey field but not much was settled. Sue North scored the lone Red Raider goal in a 1-1 standoff. Debbie Garvey picked up the assist. In another South Cape May County battle last week, Middle got the best of Lower. Coles once again was superb in the net, stop-

CROSS COUNTRY runner Ross Hufnagle found himself in a usual place last week, first place. Hufnagle won the meet for Wildwood, but the Warriors could only split a tri-meet. Wildwood squeaked past Sacred Heart 27-31, but lost to Buena 20-40. Middle Township also split a tri-meet last week. The Panthers topped Absegami and lost to Hammonton. THE TENNIS TEAMS for Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic went dowTi to the last match before either could claim victory'. Wildwood captured the last doubles match to win 3 to 2. Jennifer Johnson of Wildwood and Thea Sanford of W.C. were the singles victors. Lower Cape May also had a dogfight, but came up on the short end of the score. Sacred Heart fjestled the Tigers 3-2. Margaret Kelly won her singles match with teammates Sally Pomykacz and Kelli Weeks won in doubles. By the way, Laura Mossbrook remains undefeated as she over took Kris Schmidt of Millville last week. Mossbrook’s Holy Spirit team, Holy Spirit, owns a 13-1 slate. Mossbrook, a senior from Court House, also began participation in the interscholastic singles play. She
took care of Jeralny Darmiento of North Plainfield 60, 6-0. MARKERS: Just two things to talk about this week and both haveto do with Philadelphia teams. Everyone keeps on telling me if the Phillies had played better they could have won the World Series. Bull. The Baltimore Orioles have the best team and shouldn’t have lost even one game to the Phillips. The Phillies' played in the weakest division in the National League and so-called momentum carried them past the choking Los Angles Dodgeft. The Orioles, on the other hand, played in the best division and played the same type of baseball they had for 162 games this year. Pitching, bench and defense. That’s how you win it all and the O’s had the best best. Remember, the Phillies did win the National League. I don’t know if that means all that much any more. The other thing is the Eagles. Going into Dallas, (thanks to the Phils) the Eagles were given a chance to show what they are really made of this year. I guess we have our answer. The Cowboys had to use every trick in the book to edge the weakest of the weak and stomped the Philly team. It was a real bad Sunday for Philadelphia. Besides the lesson in the Series and the massacre in Dallas, the Sixers lost to Boston in a game marred by three fights and the Flyers lost for the first time to the N.Y. Rangers.
