In Middle To The Editor White the toxic waste dump known ax Price’s Pit »eems to tie Retting all the attention in South Jersey. Cape May ('ounty is being neglected The Williamft Dump, located in a residential area off C S Itoute 9. in Middle Township, is just as serious as the Price's«Pit location I cannot understand the lack of concern by the En vironmental Protection Agency tEPAi for the people anrf the drinking water in that area of.Middle^Vi^nship The EPA has been totally irresponsive to the demands of elected officials, environmentalists, and the residents of that area Because of this “inaction." Congressman Jim Florin. author of the Superfund Legislation to clean up chemical waste dumps, ordered an investigation of the EPA s handling of toxic waste dumps in New Jersey THE INVEMTKiATOH. Edward Kitzmaurlce of the Commerce. Transportation, and Tourism subcommittee, concluded the superfund clean up is not working in New Jersey because of the internal problems at the EPA's headquarters and EPA's Region I! offices The Fitz maurice report cited a lack of organization, poor filing systems, understaffing of engineers and technicians, and poor coordination between the EPA and federal agencies So. while the bureaut/atlc red tape continues and con linues. the people of Middle Township must tolerate un safe drinking water and political rhetoric The chemicals keep seeping into our water supply and the bureaucratic in Washington do nothing There has to be a better way to handle the defusing of this "Time Bomb" which is ready to go off in Middle Township JIM ALEXIS Cape May Court House {ED NOTE Alexlt {$ the Democratic candidate for Mid die Townthip Committee ) Bill Permits Pets To The Editor Assembly Bill 1288 which would permit tenants in apartmeifl houses to keep pets will soon be voted on in the New Jersey Senate We feel that this bill, which provides for certain restrictions on the tenant and grants rights of recourse to the landlord, is fair to all concerned We strongly urge your readers to call or write their senators in support of this bill. Many New Jersey residents, especially the elderly and those whose pet is their only "family.” are anxiously awaiting passage of this bill Thank you for caring NINA AUSTENBERG Mid-Atlantic Regional Director The Human Society of the United States Bedminster No Gas, No Juice

Free Health Clinic?
To The Editor: I was delighted to see that Jim Alexis, Township Committee candidate in Middle Township, has proposed a Blood Pressure Clinic in Middle Township This is the first time that I can remember that such a proposal has been made by anyone in Middle Township Since Middle Township is one of the largest communities in Cape May County and since we have one of the largest Senior Citizen populations in the county. I feel such a clinic would be very helpful to our residents. Having this service available in our Municipal Building twice a month would enable people to receive a vita! service free of charge. Your newspaper has carried articles whereby Sea Isle City and West Cape May have both successfully launched similar clinics By using the services, of the Public Health Department and volunteers from the community. Alexis has given us an excellent proposal Let’s all work to see that his idea is given serious consideration KATE VAN METER Dias Creek ^ 3

We’re Losing Many Trees
By DOROTHY D. FREAS Are we aware that we are losing too many trees? Not suddenly, but through an insidious, slow encroachment that could remove entire species in a few years, if drastic measures are not taken Shade trees in the United States are worth many hundreds of millions of dollars, but that doesn’t give us the . value of their beauty. When we go to a park for recreation, the restful atmosphere comes from the surrounding trees, a feeling of permanence and security Much has been written on the subject of encouraging the balance between trees, birds and insects, but man, unthinking, becomes nature’s enemy With new developments and entire new sections of towns being opened up, the trees have more adverse conditions with which to contend. MANY BUILDERS leave a number of trees when they plan a new section of homes This adds greatly to the attractiveness of the area However, in the excavating of cellars or the laying of pipes, many root systems ye cut, causing trees to die in a few years. Injury to tree trunks by bulldozers allows fungus or bacteria into the inner layers of the tree. Even when grading the lot, fill placed too high on the trunk will keep air frorrwthe roots or cause rain to drain so quickly from the tree that it will not survive the loss of water to the root system. -—- Close observation should be made of the trees of each community, and everything done to preserve them for future generations
No Free Flu Vaccine To The Editor: As a retired public health professional. I have been reading with interest the articles on the health problems of the elderly in Cape May County. The lack of a program for prevention of serious illness in this group has been impressed upon me as I have inquired about the availability of influenza vaccine at cost to elderly citizens. This service is provided in other New Jersey counties and in other states by having special immunization days set aside for this purpose I have been impressed by the number of free buses and the excellent adult education classes available at a reduced rate in the county ’ It would be cost effective if the activities for prevention of illness would match these other fine services. Endure Winter With Research
By JOE ZELNIK There's a winner, but no prize, in my "Should I make my bed every morning’" contest The best answer, which came from Head of River, stated J'Don’t make your bed in the summer, when you’re working, but make it the rest of the year, when you're collecting." Our judges picked that as the top entry because it was typical, topical, and logical No prize was awarded because it was submitted anonymously. The contest response'was especially heavy and amounted to a poll on making beds, with these results: No, 22,300; yes, 87. A location breakdown found the "no" votes fairly evenly distributed throughout the county, but all 87 "yes" votes came from beachfront residents AS A RESULT. I am applying for a $14,000 federal grant to research tidal influence on neatness. The study will be centered in Strathmere. of course. I've intended a number of research projects for some time and, with a sullen, sodden Cape May County winter approaching, this seems the ideal time to seek funds. Following are the general topics. esUmated costs, and likely research locations. Extra-sensory perception after two Galliano stingers Cost. $6 Location, Stone Harbor. • The effectiveness of cats as subsUtutes for divorced husbands Previous research indicated 83 percent of newly divorced women get cats. Considering the rising divorce rate, research will be invaluable to the SPCA and cat food industry. Cost. $83 Location, Del Haven RELATIONSHIP between tourists and wind velocity. Experts reported that the county's last tourists departed on Oct 10 and were immediately replaced by high winds My hypothesis is that the wind is always present, but unnoticed because wall-to-wall tourists cut it down Cost,
$4.6 million. Location, shore communities. • Purchase of two county helicopters is supposed to have improved mosquito control by 50 percent. Postulate: Buy two more, improve control 100 percent, and totally eliminate the suckers, plus gnats and greenflies. Cost, $700. Location, Dias Creek • Cultural differences between mainland and off-shore residents. This would help retailers trying to appeal to both groups. Cost, *450.000 Location. Burleigh, Ma7ville and Nummy. • WHY DON'T BLONDES get gray hair? Using prior statistics proving that blondes keep later hours and dance more (''have more fun ") than brunettes, this would eaplore the premise that those factors lock out gray hair osUrCoaLloO Location. Friday afternoon happy hour at the Whitebrier Inn. Avalon. • The debilitating eflect on Burdette Tomlin hospital pa Uenta of having to park far from the hospital and walk last a doctor's parking lot jammed with Eldoradoa sad Continentals Preliminary study indicates the hospital could reduce paUent depression and cut hospital length-of-stay by hiding the lot al the rear of the building. Coat •1.400. Location. Court House. • The county has a critical shortage of Mexican restaurants and dry cleaning establishments. Result Most residents have underdeveloped duodena (see ''Health Watch' on opposite page) and dirty clothes .Implications'' Coat, *400 Location: Ocean Clly and Ihe Wiidwoods. • Freexer Burn: American Myth. Food experts have long claimed something called "freezer bum" results if food is kept too long in the freezer. My premise is that the term was invented by the food industry to induce people to Uirow away perfectly good food. I recently dined on a defrosted, half-fillet mignon leftover from a dinner at Ed pberer's in August. 1976. It was excellent. Cost $19 95 Location. Anglesea
