A picture is worth a thou sand words wtwn describing a hiatal hernia, so please refer to the diagram while reviewing this article. A '‘he^nia , ' refers to a condition in which any of the bodv s organs slips partially through a weakness in the wall of the muscle surrounding it. A hiatal hernia refers specifically to the stomach As you can see, your esophagus normally passes through an opening in the diaphragm (sheet of muscle) to hook up with the stomach. This opening is called the "hiatus". In some people the muscular tissue around this hiatus weakens, allowing the lower portion of the esophagus and sometimes the top of the stomach to slide up through the opening, this is called a "hiatal hernia." Many people past the age of SO havejome degree of hiatal hernia, although they are generally not bothered by if. It is also

more common in those who are overweight. PATIENT* ttHO experience symptoms generally report a painful burning sensation in the chest. It may be most troublesome at night, because acid can flow into the esophagus most easily when lying down or bent over. You may find yourself swallowing air unintentionally to relieve the pain. Building on last week's discussion on hearttwm, it should be noted that the hernia itself. Rather, there is a tendency for the muscles of the esophagus which prevent stomach contents from entering the esophagus to weaken. Stomach acid then refluxes (travels) back up into the esophagus, causing the burning pain and thus ir‘ritating delicate tissues

Library

Records, records, records — the Cape May County Library has recently added over 100 new records to its collection. We’ve tried to add something for everyone. For nostalgia buffs there is Over Here, Over There; The Most Popular Songa in England and America During World War II. An American Heritage record which includes “We’re Gonna Hang Out the Washin’ (on the Siegfried Line) in England and “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition" (inspired by the words of a Navy chaplain during the attack on Pearl Harbor) in America. It was the era of the big bands and on both sides of the Atlantic they heeded the call to boost their nation's morale. Other titles include “tali Marlene", “The White Cliffs of Dover”, “I’ll Get By", "Lovely Way to Spend an Evening”. "Sentimental Journey" and others / Wants To Be A Actor Lady and Other Hits from Early Musical Comedies takes its songs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries The first disconnected assemblage of songs, dances and satirical sketches known as the revue in this country was first presented in the "Passing Show’’. The first extravaganza combining scenic splendor and dancing girls in abbreviated costumes was successfully offered in “The Black Crook”. The songs from these and other shows recreate the spirit and style of a bygone period. The soundtrack from "Ragtime" the motion picture and the original Broadway Cast Album of "Dreamgirls" were included for those whose tastes run to show tunes. Like to exercise to music? As we discussed last week, chronic heartburn can be a symptom of any one of many disorders Your preventive medical role in reporting this symp^ tom to your physician can lead to early detection of many significant disorders. Examples are that of cancer of the esophagus, lung disease, heart disease, scar, ulcer, or just reflux of acid coup! ed with a hiatal hernia A HIATAL hernia can develop complications such as becoming twisted in such a way that the blood is cut off or "strangulated ” This may require surgery If inflammation of the esophagus from the reflux is severe, special treatment may be needed, otherwise, ulcers can develop and/or scar tissue which makes swallowing difficult. In most cases antacids, weight Ices, elevation of the

head of the bed, avoidance of smoking and certain foods will help control symptoms Should symptoms persist, your physi cian may order X-rays, a look into the stomach with a special lighted tube called an "endoscope," and a cardiogram A brief word on long term use of antacids - beware! Antacids can cause diarrhea, constipation, remove calcium from your system, cause the body to retain magnesium Your physician may want to take steps to control these side effects More importantly, such long term antacid use may be a signal that something else is going on and bears looking into' Also keep in mind that disturbances of digestion and trouble swallowing are among the warning signs of cancer Bring these concerns to thea Kent ion of your doctor Health Watch is a project of the Public Education Committee of the Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society.
