Lower, Middle Win; Wildwood Walloped

The Lower Cape May football team used a great defense and a punt return to record a 13 to 0 win over Absegami. The Tigers scored after a blocked punt in the second period. Quarterback Sean Brennen hit receiver Bruce Fournier in the middle of the end zone for the one-yard

score.

Brennen later dashed 70 yards on a punt return for the Tiger’s last score in the fourth quarter. It marked the second straight week that Brennen scored on a punt return. The Capers improved their record to

3-1-1. • • •

A 55-yard drive in the closing minutes led to a one-yard plunge by Tim Edwards on a. fourth down play, to give Middle Township a 7-6 victory over Pleasantville. Steve McKeig ran for an 11-yard pickup to the five where the Panters scored four plays later. Bob Hicks kicked the important point-after to seal the win for Middle.

Wildwood played on the road for the second straight week and with similar results. The Warriors were trounced once again, this time by Biiena, 36 to 2. The only Wildwood tally came when, the defense trapped Buena quarterback Darren Perry in the end zone for a safety. The Warriors record fell to 0-4 on the season. Jonathon Dice sewed 22 points for Ocean City Saturday as the Raiders dumped Bridgeton, 34 to 18. Dice rolled up 124 yards rushing while scoring three times. The O.C. defense did a great job in holding Bridgeton’s leading rusher, Jeff Martin, to just 42 yards. Martin had over 500 yards in his last two games. Quarterback John Gunnels had a fine day passing with a 5 for 7,100-yard day. Ocean City now sports a 3 and 2 record. IT LOOKED LIKE Wildwood Catholic was going to pull off a big upset in girls field hockey last week — until the last four minutes were played. Ha mm on ton scored twice in that time period to stop the upset-minded Crusaders by a 2 to 1 count. Mary Gavin scored the lone W.C, goal in the first period. Catholic’s record fell to 1-5-2 with the loss. Earlier in the week, Gavin scored twice in her team's first win, a 2-0 shutout of Lower Cape May. Crusader goalie Kelly Gallagher recorded eight saves in the win to record her third shutout of the season Dawn Horner missed the best chance Lower had to score when her penalty shot went above the cross bar. The Capers stand at 2-4-1 with the loss.

IN BOYS CROSS COUNTRY action last week, Paul Koch of Wildwood Catholic topped Wildwood’s Ross Hufnagle by just eight seconds to lead W C. to victory in a tri-meet which also involved Absegami. Jim Malinowski, Marty Marcolongo and Chris Lambert also finished well for Catholic as the Crusaders ran their record to 6-3 on the year.

Wildwood stands at an even

4-4.

Lower Cape May saw Atlantic City take the top three places in a meet which A.C. won easily, 20 1 35. BUI Weber finished first out of the Caper runners, but he was some 40 seconds behind the winner.

Gene Watts finished in the top spot for Ocean City as the Red Raiders swept past Egg Harbor and Holy Spirit. Andy Mayers came in fourth to clinch the double win for O.C. JENNIFER JOHNSON stroked her way to an easy

.6-1, 6-1 win last week to lead her Wildwood team to a 4-1 win over Absegami. Lisa Wilson and Jackie Roma ine teamed to take the number one doubles. They did it in 6-4, 6-1 fashion. WUdwood Catholic and Middle Township hooked up in what turned out to be

a very close tennis match. Tracey Yarborough won the top single match for Middle, but her team could not hold on as W.C. won 3 to 2. The teams of Marion Hughes-Holly Stokes and Franci Barcas-Jennifer Deane won the doubles for

Catholic to secure victory.
