ATLANTIC CITY - A fifth vepel will be added to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Fleet, but it’s going to cost the Delaware River and Bay Authority $3.7 million more than the last addition in 1961. The $14.5 million contract for construction of the new ferry was approved by the commissioners at their October meeting. The new ferry, is scheduled for delivery in May, 1985. The vessel acquired in 1961 cost $10.8 million. The need for the fifth vessel, according to Authority Director William J. Miller Jr., became apparent with the constantly increasing volume of vehicles and walk-on passengers in recent years The contract is with the Norfolk Shipbuilding and Dry dock Corp. The new vessel will be similar to the one built by that firm and delivered to the authority in June, 1961. The difference in cost, according to Miller, is the result of continuing inflation over a four-year period, and some technical changes in the new ferry. ALSO AT the meeting, Miller announced that operations to salvage the monuments establishing ihe boundary of the Delaware River and the Delaware Bay took place Oct. 5. The contract, undertaken by J.E. Brenneman Co., of Philadelphia, involved the raising of two submerged monuments — one at Hope Creek on the Jersey shore, the other at Liston Point on the Delaware shore. Peterson Joins Trash Fight COURT HOUSE - Middie Township Committee member Pat Peterson last week announced she would "fight along with ray'fellow elected officials" against a proposed trash transfer station on Shunpike. She made the announcement because she was out of town, she said, and unable to attend a Committee meeting at which the other members attacked the Municipal Utilities Authority proposal. Peterson is a Republican candidate for reelection.
The two monuments will be restored by Wilmington Memorial Co., after which a permanent pier will be constructed on each side of the Delaware River. The final work on the project, which involves the erection of the monuments on the new supports, is expected to be completed by the end of 1963. Tbe total cost of the project is estimated at $100,000. In other matters, the Authority reviewed the second progress report on the Delaware River One-Way Toll Study submitted by Wilbur Smith and Associates, Inc. The report compares the regulatory conditions of the seven bridges involved in the
study, and includes a summary of travel patterns and trip characteristics obtained from a recently conducted survey of the bridges. Of particular interest to Delaware Memorial bridge patrons is the finding that 40 percent of the Delaware Memorial Bridge traffic is related to recrational or travel purposes. At other bridges the main traffic purpose was for work or business activities. Also, a higher percentage of Delaware Memorial; Bridge traffic is for shopping, compared to the other bridges. The final report on the One-Way Toll Study will be forthcoming in early 1964.
