Celebrates 50 Years
VFW Post CAPE MAY - Peterson Liltie Post 386, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a roast beef dinner and dance Saturday, Nov. 26, at the post rooms on Congress St. The post, founded Nov. 25, 1933, is the oldest VFW post in Cape May County. The first commander was William Jaeggers nje second commander, Bob Hand, is still an active member at the age of 86 ‘Commended Students’
COURT HOUSE - Middle Township High School has been notified that three of its students have been designated Commended Students in the 1984 National Merit Scholarship Program John J. McVey, principal, announced that Lisa DeGenova, Dean Orsini, and Doris Ross placed in the top five percent of over one million participants in the 29th annual Merit Program. Although Commended Students will not receive further consideration for Merit Scholarships, each has demonstrated unusual academic promise and will be honored with a Letter of Commendation.
Optimists Install
WILDWOOD - BUI Watson was installed as president of the Middle Township Optimist Club at an installation dinner held recently at NeU’s Steak and Oyster House. Other officers, instaUed by Lt. Gov. Carl Baker, were: Charles Gass, vice president; Bud Keen, vice president; Bob Wells, secretary treasurer. Members of the board of directors are John Supplee, Hunter Anderson, Jerry Hurd, Russ Kiss, Charlie Gruff, and Dave Dickinson.
The present commander is James Lee, the last of 24 commanders who have served the post. The post first met upstairs at the old Convention Hall. The post later bought the Odd Fellows Lodge home on Perry St., and in 1969 moved to the present location, 419 Congress St. The post now has 225 members, with 26 life members. The ladies' auxiliary, started in 1933, is also the oldest in the county. Julia Pitcock was first president.
The current president is Rhoda Johnson, and there are 52 members.
On Tomb Trek CAPE MAY - Post 386 Cooties Pup Tent 86, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will send a delegation to Washington, D.C., for the 49th Tomb Trek Service this weekend. Members making the trip are Sonny Jones, Robert Gunn, James Lee, Andrew Senlick and Herman Harmon.
