Direct Deposit Advisable
People in the local area who receive Social Security or supplemental security income checks can gain important advantages if they arrange to have their checks deposited directly into an account in a financial institution, a Social Security spokesperson said recently. A person with direct deposit does not have: to stand in line to cash or deposit the check; to worry if he or she is away from home on the day the check arrives; any problems cashing the check because the money goes directly into an account; to worry about having the check stolen. A PERSON can arrange for direct deposit by contacting the financial institution of his or her choice and asking for direct deposit form SF-1199. A person’s Social Security or SSI check contains enough information to complete the form. Direct deposit only authorizes deposits in a person’s account. Only the person or his or her authorized representatives can make withdrawals. A person should ask someone at the financial institution how direct depost will be handled and whether there is any charge. IT IS VERY important for people with direct deposit to notify Social Security of any change in their address, the representative said. Social Security must be able to communicate with all people who receive checks. A person who fails to notify Social Security about an address change runs the risk of having his or her checks stopped until Social Security learns where the person is living. More information about direct deposit can be obtained at any Social Security office or at any financial institution. The address and telephone number of the nearest Social Security office can be found in the telephone directory.
Aged Aid Protected
Under Law
TRENTON - Gov. Thomas Kean has signed legislation that prohibits the state from recovering Pharmaceutical Assistance for the Aged and Disabled benefits from the estates of former recipients of the program. The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Dennis Riley, D-Camden, permits the state to recover the benefits only when they were paid illegally or incorrectly. Under the old law, the state could recover the benefits if they amounted to over $500, the estate was worth over $3,000 and the deceased left do surviving spouse or child under 18.

Don t Be Conned: Information Free
An increasing number of firms apparently believe they can convince people to pay for information about Social Security or pay for a service provided by Social Security, both of which are available from the Social Security Administration without any charge whatsoever, a Social Security spokesperson said recently. Several Texas-based firms offer to assist new brides to change their names in Social Security records for a fee of $10. At least one offers to help new parents obtain a Social Security number of their newborn children, again for a $10 fee. THESE FIRMS apparently get their leads from local marriage and birth records. They now operate nationwide, the representative said. A New York-based firm offers to obtain a statement of a person's earnings reported to Social Security and provide a benefit estimate for a fee of $12. Another firm will obtain a statement of a person’s earnings for $3, $5 if both husband and wife apply. Another organization caters to the more affluent. For $35 they will provide an estimate of future benefits and the only information they ask is the person’s age and last year’s earnings. No meaningful estimate can be made with so little information, the spokesperson said. THE SIGNIFICANT point is Social Security provides all these services, and more, without making any charge to the public, and in addition, the information available from Social Security is accurate and up to date. The information given out by some of these companies is often outdated or made misleading or inaccurate by new legislation. Free information about all Social Security programs can be obtained at
any Social Security office. The address and telephone number can be found in the telephone directory.
