Take Care with SS Reports

People who make reports on behalf of Social Security beneficiaries should use care to make sure the reports are clear and cannot be misinterpreted, a Social Security spokesperson said recently A report that is wrongly interpreted can often cause mistakes. For example, a hospital or nursing home reports a person's date of discharge as DOD, which a Social Security employee believes stands for “date of death." As a result, the person's benefits are stopped The person is put to great inconvenience in getting the system to believe he or she is still alive. ANOTHER situation that arises is that a person who has been getting checks on behalf of another dies. The report is given in such a way that it appears that the person who was getting Social Security checks had died, again causing great inconvenience. “To avoid these kinds of mistakes," the representative said, "people are urged to use care when they make a report concerning a person receiving Social Security checks. They should make it very clear what is being

reported and give the name of the person concerned, the date it happened, and the Social Security claim number of the person about whom the report is being made." IF THERE IS any doubt in the person's mind, he or she should ask a Social Security employee to

review the information in the report. More information about Social Security benefits can be obtained at any Social Security office. The address and telephone number of the nearest Social Security office can be found in the telephone directory.

SS Offices Aiming For Best Service

The goal of every Social Security office is to provide the best possible service to people in this area in all matters pertaining to Social Security, Medicare, or supplemental security income, a Social Security spokesperson said recently. The importance of Social Security to this area is quite apparent, the representative said. For example, Social Security benefits alone amount to millions of dollars each month. OUTLYING AREAS are served by representatives who visit other communities on a regular basis. In the office, there is a specially trained unit that can answer questions over the telephone. This unit also handles other matters such as changing addresses, receiving notices of death, work, and other events that affect receipt of Social Security or sup-

plemental security income checks. Because the programs administered by Social Security are so important to the people in the community, an active public information program is conducted by the office staff, the representative said. FREE PUBLICATIONS describing Social Security, Medicare, and supplemental security income can be obtained at the office. Peoare available to speak ore civic and social groups when invited. Courteous and efficient service to all members of the public for all their needs relating to Social Security is a goal toward which all members of the staff constantly work, the spokesperson said. More information can be obtained at any Social Security office. The address and telephone number of the nearest Social Security office can be found in the telephone directory.
