Beach Boys fans have a lot to cheer about with the recent release of Rarities (Capitol). This album compiles various unreleased tracks, obscure singles, and different mixes and it shows the Beach Boys to have been one of the most creative forces in pop music during the 60s/70s. It’s a thrill to be able to listen to alternate takes of “Good Vibrations”, "In My Room”, and "I Was Made To Love Her”, as well as hear them tackle pieces such as The Box Tops’ “The Letter” and the BeaUes’ "With A Little Help From My Friends”. It's been a long time since

The Beach Boys have provided us with new vinyl and, until they do, anyone who appreciates quality music and excellent singing will enjoy Rarities. Ian Hunter's new album. All of The Good Ones Are Taken (Columbia) just might be his strongest one since leaving Mott The Hoople to go solo. The songs are well-written, he’s in fine voice, and his backing musicians give him sympathetic support. Hunter has always been capable of doing a good job on ballads as well as all out rockers and this record is. no exception. Ian Hunter should do well on the charts with this and it would be a nice treat to have the title song become a hit single. It deserves it. HEAVY METAL continues its onslaught with a whole slew of new releases. AC/DC's Flick 0/ The Switch (Atlantic) continoes in their tradition of biting guitar breaks and gruff vocals. It’s all a bit safe and predictable, although I doubt their fans will complain. AC/DC’s main problem is their uneven material. Still, this will no doubt be another gold record for AC/DC. Quiet Riot’s Metal Health (Pasha) is, for the most part, a typical heavy metal album, but these guys show potential as they not only have talent but also a keen sense of humor. Iteir hit “Cum On Feel The Noixe” was originally done with more style by England's Slade back in the early 70s, but Quiet Riot still pull off a credible cover. This band should be watched. My current favorite heavy metal band is England’s Fastway, led by former Motorhead guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke. Their debut on Columbia is full of tight playing, good vocals, and better than average songwriting. Fastway seem to be destined for great things. The Best of Tim Buckely (Rhino, 1201 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica CA. 90404) is a wonderful introduction to the late singer-songwriter’s unique style. Tim Buckley never found much commercial success, but as this record amply proves, few took the artistic chances he did. Buckley’s music was a combination of folk, R&B, rock, and, especially, jazz. He had a rich voice and his acoustic 12-string guitar gave each number atmosphere.
