coiongo of Catholic and Rich Geraid of O.C. also finished well in the field that seemed to be bunched after the top two finishers. The order of finish in the county run looked like this Ocean City with 28, Wildwood Catholic at 54, Lower Cape May with 79, Wildwood at 101, and Mid die Township with 164 points THE ST. JOSEPH girls field hockey team left Mid die Township shell-shocked last way as St Joe s topped the Panters 5-0. It was the seventh shutout of the season for goalie Kim Scola. Low«r Cape May also saw thg goose egg go up on the scoreboard as Hammonton zipped the Tigers 1-9,- L.C.M. netminder .Jferry Obermeyer played well except for the lone Blue Devil tally. Obermeyer also stopped a penalty shot in the second half to keep her team close. Ocean City also participated in a shutout last week, but the Red Raiders were on the heavy side of the scoreboard Sue North scored twice in the first half in a 3-0 win over Oakcrest. Debbie Garvey tallied the last goal for O.C. ON THE SOCCER field, shutouts also made the week interesting. Ocean City scored a big one against Oakcrest a 7-0 laugher. Joe Morrisey netted four goals in the win that raised the
Raider record to 11-2-1. Morrisey received help from supporting cast members Rob Donovan and Bill Gallagher. Donovan scored twice. Middle Towsnhip and Egg Harbor Township has a real battle royal which went right down to the wire. Buy Strempack became the hero as he scored for E.H.T. with just 68 seconds left in a 2-1 victory. Kevin MacFarlane gave Middle a short-lived lead with a goal in the third period. Panther Goal tender Paul Burnley stopped 13 E.H.T. shots in the loss. Wilwood Cathloic found the going rough against Cumberland, once again a shutout, 5-0.
TELL ME, what in the world has happened to high school football in Cape May County. If it wasn’t for Ocean City recently, the local teams would be laughed off the field. Jonathon Dice once again seemed to be the only outstanding talent in the county this past weekend. Dice rushed for two touchdowns in a 32-0 shutout at Egg Harbor Township. Frank Sayers and John Gunnels each scored IDs in the third quarter as the Red Raiders pulled away with a 19-point stanza. Things look just awful for the Wildwood Warriors. They scored first, as usual,
Women’s Volleyball Starts
CAPE MAY - In the inaugural match of the 1983-84 women’s volleyball season Thunder & Roses went up against the Kona Women. Kona jumped off to a quick two-game lead (15-6, 15-9) as the serving the overall court play of Lorraine Taylor and Lydia Harper was too much for a game Thunder & Roses team. Thunder & Roses stormed back, however, behind the enthusiasm and offensive play of Elaine Bennick to win the final two games (15-10, 15-13) and spUt the match. In the second match-up the Shire was pitted against C-View. In the first game C-View pulled off a narrow victory 17-15 with great court coverage. Korg Stew ard-Joyce. Fran Vogle, Lynn Massimiano and Sue Fhz played excellent defense in this thriller. In the second game the Shire stormed back to trounce C-View 15-4 as
Marlene Mediuch and Lorraine Holt filled out a balanced attack. Game three was much of the same as the Shire downed the C-View 15-3 behind Amy Truman, who served eight consecutive points for the Shire. Gheryl Giddis and Jan Keliaway set and dug exceptionally well for the Shire The Shire closed out the match with its third consecutive victory 15-10 behind a balanced offense and stiff defense. Cage Tryouts CAPE MAY - The City Youth Basketball Leagues will be conducting tryouts and registrations at the City Elementary School noon-2 p.m. Nov. 19 and 26. but lost, as usual. Greg Cardeci ran 53 yards with the ''pigskin in the first quarter to provide the Warriors with a 6-0 lead. Then things went back to normal, and St. Josephs scored 34 unanswered points to take the victory. Maybe it should be the first one to score wins. At Cape May Court House, Middle Township hosted interdivisional rival Bridgeton and will probably think twice before asking them to come back. Rob Hicks hooked up with Robert Jones on a 28-yard pass play to knot the score at seven before the Bulldogs pulled away. Final score Bridgeton 28, Middle 7. Lower Cape May didn’t want to feel left out on Saturday, so they used an invisible defense and turned the ball over a number of items in a 22-0 loss to Hammonton. The Caper charity party provided the Blue Devils with their sixth win of the season with no losses. L.C.M. fell to 3-2-1 with the shutout. Remarks: This past week I had a conversation with a friend on the latest contract dispute in the sportsworld, the N.B.A. and their referees. I found myself defending the refs, maybe not for their causes, but for the game itself and the fans. Once again the fans are the ones paying for a walkout. The substitute refs are causing the game to turn into a disaster. They make calls on a high school level and are very inconsistent. They are not aware of what to let go and what to call. That takes years to learn and the game is suffering so far this season. 1 think the players should walk out until the matter is settled. Just think, if the
players had walked out last year, the refs would be out of work.
