Slews Notes from Seven Mile Beach M'Ellen Row land 368-2294
Betty Light of Avalon told us this week that when former Councilwoman Rachel H. Sloan was elected mayor of the borough she turned over the job as director of the Avalon Committee for Performing Arts to Councilwoman Jean Glazier. Jean has lost none of the momentum which was rolling last year. The first event for the season will be a concert jointly sponsored by the Avalon Women's Civic Club and the Avalon Home and Land-owners's Assoc. It will be given by the Angelus Chorus of CMCH under the direction of Paul Scull (owner of Scull’s Dept. Store). It will be held Saturday. Dec. 3. at 8 p.m. 'Hie musical part of the evening will last about an hour, after which complimentary wine and cheese refreshments will be served. Pres. Tom McKittrick of the Home and Land-owners Assoc. 214-52nd St. (phone 967-8232) may he contacted for reservations as well as any member of either organization. Tickets will also be available at the door. Great news for us is that the Lewis Shearer Chorale has already been booked for March 25. This approx imately 100-member group, which comes together to practice weekly, has members who come from Haddonfield, Glassboro and as far north as Tom’s River. They are a Shear (pardon) delight, so mark your calendar now. MONDAY. OCT. 31, was a full one in Stone Harbor. There was a lengthy meeting of the KIT group that lasted past noon, a meeting of Borough Council at 4:30 p.m., when council voted unanimously to restrict the limits of the use of liquor licenses to the business district, and influx of little trick or treaters 6 - 8 p.m. and last but not least, the S.H. Senior’s annual Halloween party at the American Legion Post. We’ve lived here five years and enjoyed this one most. Under the direction of the Russell Baileys with a hard working comittee consisting of the Carey Bosses. Andrew Woolerys, Sara Brady, Ray deLaurentises, Strokmetzes, Daniels. Stumps, Anne Allen, McMahons, Stris and Klotz buchers Spook Night was on a high roll from first to last. It started out with a grand march for the judging of costumes in three categories The judges were Anne Allen, Betty Sihert and her sister Sophie. This is always a rough job and the reason so many people showed up in fancy dress was because they were facetiously warned they would be made judges if they didn't wear costumes The winners were: Most Original - Peg Grimes as a Supreme Court Justice; Best Couple - Grace and Leon Keller as an Amish couple, lacking only a horse and buggy: Prettiest - Marcelle deLaurentu as a madam; and Funniest - Ray deLaurentis as the Happy Hooker (fisherman). Games like the
Grapefruit Game and njusical chairs were played among others and all the dances like the Mummers' Strut, Alley Cat, ad infinitum. The Seniors orchestra accompanied the dancing and Drew Woolen, was the disc jockey during the yummy feast which followed. The food was delectable and far too varied to describe but we must mention Becky Bailey’s bite-size pineapple cream puffs — she must have made 200! Pat (Mrs. Jack) Fitzpatrick planned a luncheon Oct. 25 for the disbanding Over-Fifty Nifties. It was a surprise party to honor Rita Adamick, one of the original members who is moving with her husband to California to be closer to their family, and the one and only Marge Otton (Mrs. James) who founded the then-named Nifty Fifties about 1975. Margie Otton has headed the organization ever since. With her usual ingenuity Pat told the two bonorees that the luncheon was being given in honor of the other one and natch, she surprised both of them. Marge has continued as bead of the Fifties since its inception and each of the 23 guests has, at one time or another, contributed time and talent to the organization. They rehearsed weekly and gave frequent programs at nursing homes, hospitals and other institutions where a note of cheer would brighten people’s lives. In addition Marge has served as a member of the Borough's Recreation Committee and still holds story hours for children at the Stone Harbor Library. Recently she has been troubled by bouts of arthritis and nas decided to retire from the first two activities until an alleviation for the ailment has been discovered. In their heyday the Fifties have given of such talents'as: Julie and Rudy D'Alessandro giving an exhibition of ballroom dancing; Rita, Margie and Julie doing a coordinated tap dance; Sara Brady leading a hymn-sing; Marge demonstrating the hula; and almost always accompanied by Ray deLaurentis and Harry Strohmetz on various musical instruments. At the very end of the party Rita Adamick suffered a slight heart attack which scared the other guests until Rita's husband assured them that it had been a warning rather than anything serious and she will probably be home by the time you read this. All in all, it was a welldeserved tribute to two members of this community who have spent hour upon hour bringing joy and the spirit of love to so many and all those who cooperated in the effort On Wednesday, Nov 2, the S.H. Seniors had a Dutch treat luncheon at Deauville Inn in Strathmere. It was a glorious day and 73 people joined the merriment Unfortunately we couldn't make it, because the descriptions have made us very envious. We called the
program director, Grace Keller, this morning. She told us she was thrilled with the success of the event and couldn't say enough in praise of management. Everyone was seated on the porch overlooking Corsoa’s Inlet and enjoying the play of sunlight on the water. There was an excellent speaker too. Peggy Spencer of the Cape MayCounty Office on Aging was the icing on the cake. Incidently, Grace Keller, who moved down here only a year ago, is the new program director for the Seniors and doing a bangup job of it. She already has plans made for after the new year and her enthusiasm about her and Leon’s choice of a retirement home gives everybody i lift. WE HAVE LEARNED that four "South Jersey Surfers were recipients of 1983 Marsh Scholarships awarded by the Eastern Surfing Association. They include Ocean City’s Charlie Bowman from Atlantic Community College, who wag a $500 grant; Lisa Roselh of Wildwood Crest, a senior at Stockton State, who won her second $500 scholarship; and Jennifer and Joe Grottda, also of Wildwood Crest were and also from Stockton State, each awarded $350 Marsh Scholarships. The program was named in honor of the Marsh family of North Carolina, which has done much to promote surfing on the East Coast and as a tribute to Mike Marsh, who waged a courageous struggle against illness to become an attorney and now volunteers his time in preserving surfing areas and beach access. With the help of may enthusiasts, South JerseyDistrict was the year's largest contributor to the Marsh Scholarship Fund. Tara Wolford and the staff of the school newspaper Avalon Courier keep us apprised of events taking place in their home of learning. This past month they have taken instruction in fire prevention from the fire department and were returned to the school in the big red truck. The Oct. 28 Halloween Assembly was festively decorated to encourage the wearing of costumes and a dance was held for grades 6 - 8 starting at 8 p.m. and ending at midnight Melissa Nielsen was chosen student of the month for the whole school and 5th grade enrolled five new students (thefe are now 23 in the class). Their names are: Rocky Jost, Joe Tucci, Debbie Franz, Terence Pua and Natalie DeRose.
