Lower’s Tigers Claw Bridgeton

Over the past five of six years, one team has seemed to dominate the South Jersey girls tennis competition and that team is from Ocean City. The 0,C. squad took care of Eastern enroute to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association South Jersey Group III title last week. Although the dominance is there, the team from Lower Cape May deserves a note here on their great season. ■n»e Tigers won match number 11 last week with a 3-1 win over a tough Bridgeton team. Jill Coldren, Lower’s number one singles player, easily prevailed over Jodi Nacera to set the pace in the Caper win. Margaret Kelly followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in singles play and the team of Sally Pomykacz and Kelli Weeks won in doubles to seal the match. The other doubles match ended in a tie. In other girls action, the highly touted Ocean City team lost to Millville 5-0. Maybe it was a letdown after the South Jersey competition, but one must remember that Millville has also run up 16 wins this season. IN CAPE-ATLANTIC League play. Middle Township scored in every quarter to top Wildwood, 32-22. It was Middle’s third win in seven games and left Wildwood still looking for its first victory of the

over, they played two overtimes and Clearview had a 1-0 win. The Panthers let two scoring opportunities go by the boards in OT. On one (day, Matt Maguire nailed a shot just over the crossbar, but the play was ruled off-sides. Just before the winning goal sailed past Middle goalie Paul Burnley, Tom Romig missed on a stuffer. Millville played twice last week against Cape May County teams and the results were as different as night and day. Ocean City got goals from Rob Donovan and Joe Morrisey in a 2-0 win over the Bulldogs, but Wildwood Catholic was not as fortunate. Millville won that one, 8 toO. • • • MELODY SYE was in

her usual position at the end of her cross country run last week — ahead of the rest of the competition. Sye set a course record of 19:31 in leading Ocean City past Cumberland and Oak crest last week. Sye bettered the old mark by some 39 seconds. Jane Maguire finished second for O.C. A FIELD OF 48 teams got together at the Atlantic City Country Club for the annual member-guest tourney and an Ocean City man came out on the w inning team. Bruce Trielo of O.C. and Paul Koeling carded a net score of 125 to win the event. ^ • • • / THE CAPE MAY County Youth Basketball leagues will be conducting tryouts and registrations for the

upcoming season Nov. 19 and 26. Youngsters between the ages of 8 and 13 are urtfed to participate. I think these programs are a very good way to get a young career started. REMARKS: The home field advantage. What does that mean? Well, to the Philadelphia Eagles it means that any team, weak or strong, cam come on to the . Veteran Stadium carpet and take home a win. There are internal problems within the Eagles organization that we all don’t know about. I don’t have anything to back up that statement except the way the team is playing and the time diffferent players are getting. It seems coach Marion Campbell is not pleasing all

Ocean City kept its hold on second place in Division I With a 34-0 victory over winless Atlantic City. Ocean City is 5-2. Lower Cape May tied Pleasantville, 13-13, with a field goal in the final quarter. The win gave Lower a 3-2-2 record. • • • ALTHOUGH LOWER Cape May has not been winning many games on the field hockey field this season, it knows when it is up against a push-over. The Caper Tigers released some of the frustration on Abaegami as Dawn Horner scored three times in an 8-0 win. Horner was backed up by Betsey Graig as she scored twice in the second half. Kerry Obermeyer patroled the nets for Lower and picked up the shutout. Ocean City also went the shutout route in a 4-0 blanking of Mainland Sue North provided the offense with two goals and Debbie Hoban was the defensive star. Hoban stopped all shots sent her way in jacking up her fourth shutout of the season A first half goal by Doris Ross went down the drain as Ha mm on ton came storming back to defeat Middle Township 3-1. The score remained tied until late in the second half. Wildwood Catholic ran up against the undefeated St. Joseph squad last week and the result was the same as usual. St. Joseph 2, W.C. 0. • • • IT JUST MAY go down as the most exciting contest of the year as far as soccer action goes -7 and jtot one goal was scored Middle Township and Clearview squared off in second round Group HI action, and when it was all
