Grant Aids

Salem Port

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ) and Governor Thomas Kean have announced that a federal grant of $961,450 has been awarded to the Salem, N.J. Municipal Port Authority, to construct a grain elevate - and cold storage vegetable terminal at the City’s barge port. Kean and Hughes said construction of the new facility will enable New Jersey’s farmers to join forces for the first time ever in storing and marketing the state's $50 million a year grain crop, both domestically and overseas. The grant represents an economic shot in the arm for Salem County as well as for the state’s agricultural community as a whole. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our farmers,” said Hughes, who has led the effort to develop the barge port in Salem. “By banding together in a cooperative effort, and sharing the common grain storage facilities, the farmers will gain great leverage for marketing their products.”
