WASHINGTON, D C. - Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ) has once again called on the State of New Jersey to study formally the feasibility of constructing a new east-west superhighway through South Jersey. In a letter to Governor Thomas Kean, Hughes pointed out that four people were killed in an automobile accident along Route 40 in Franklin Township just last week. “While this accident was unusually violent and saddening, it was not atypical of the problems which we are experiencing along Route 40,” Hughes wrote. “Our local highways in South Jersey, and especially Route 40, are so congested with trafflc these days that accidents are becoming a way of life. It is Essential that we begin

now to plan for an eastwest superhighway^ before this traffic congestion reaches crisis proportions.” EARLIER this year, Hughes asked New Jersey Transportation Commissioner John Sheridan to initiate a formal study of the superhighway project. He has also discussed this proposal personally with Governor Kean several times in recent months. Although the state officials reacted favorably to the idea, no funds have been committed as of yet for a feasibility study. In his letter to the governor, Hughes said he envisions a toll road which would link the Delaware Memorial Bridge with the major north-south arteries in South Jersey, including Route 295, the New Jersey Turnpike, Route 55, the Atlantic City Expressway, and the Garden State Parkway. “Considering the magnitude of this project, it would probably take 10 years before this highway could be constructed, even if we committed to it today,”<he wrote. “In view of that long lead time, it is extremely important to get the planning process un derway as soon as possible.” The South Jersey lawmaker said the highway would have to be constructed as a selfsustaining toll road, given the budgetary constraints for transportation projects at both Ahe State and Federal levels. He suggested that the state use a mechanism such as the Atlantic City Expressway Authority to fund and operate the new highway, since that agency already has jurisdiction over such a project.
Boro Crime Shows Drop
AVALON-Chief Joseph E. Foley filed the August and September monthly police reports which show a marked difference in incidents handled — 4,668 in August and 3,081 in September. In August there were 54 sick assists while in September the number dropped to 24. Motor vehicle summons dropped 85, parking violations dropped 107, motor vehicle accidents went down 40, and juvenile incidents were down 30. Traffic arrests dropped from 230 to 145 in the one month and criminal arrests dropped from 159 in August to 54 in September. It is expected to drop more as fewei visitors are in town, more residents head southward and more local businesses close for the winter months. •6 Those wishing the police to check on their homes or businesses while they are away should contact the borough police and they will. check on a regular basis.
