TRENTON — Human Services Commissioner George J Albanese has announced that Home Energy Assistance program applications are available for low-income Cape May County

" Albanese said “We will have about $70 million available for this program state wide but it is definitely first-come-first served and people should not delay in filing their applications." These services include the purchase of fuel, minor furnace repair, and the payment of utility service restoration. The program

can also pay the cost of temporary- housing caused by a heating emergency. Eligibility for the prograAi is, based on total monthly household income, the number of people in the household and the household’s responsibility for paying its own heating costs. temperature controls in the summer for documented medical reasons. ^ INDIVIDUAL heating benefits will vary depen ding on the household size, geographic location and the type of fuel used! For instance, households using oil, kerosene and electricity will receive the largest amount in benefits while households heating with all other fuels will receive lesser amounts due to the price differences. Last winter the statewide average benefit was $288. This winter individual households may receive a total of as much as $900 in regular, and emergency benefits. Under the income guidelines an individual cannot have more than $506 a month in total income and still receive befiefits. Other maximum monthly income levels are: $681 for a family of two; $856 for a family of three; $1,031 for a family of four; $1,206 for a family of five; and $1,381 fora family of six. MOST PEOPLE who receive either ^Aid to Families to Dependent Children (AFDC) or food stamp benefits will receive Home Energy Assistance benefits automatically without having to make an application. Special arrangements have been made to allow senior citizens and the disabled to complete their applications by mail. Applications are available for the elderly and disabled by contacting the Cape

May County Welfare Board. All other applications for all other lowincome households must be made in person. People who have their heating cost included in their rent are also eligible to apply, but people who live in public housing or receive a direct housing subsidy are not eligible unless they pay their heating costs directly to the fuel supplier. The ^tate Department of Human Services has also established a toll-free telephone service to give information about the program. The number is 800-257-6249 and it is in service during regular business hours to give information about the program.
