Lately, there’s been a growing interest in 60’s soul/R&B music which has resulted in some incredible, well-put together reissues Usually, it’s the small hard working indie labels who attempt such projects, but even a major such as Epic as gotton inU> the act. What follows are some of my present favorjtes, although this is just a small sampling of what’s currently available. A few weeks ago I heaped praise upon Epic’s amazing Jackie Wilson compilation, but they’ve got other prime reissues on the market. The Chi-Lites’ Greatest Hits (Epic) is a must for those who enjoy the smooth, urban style of soul. Since 1961 The ChiLites were finding success

on the soul charts, but in 1971 they crossed over into the mass market with the wonderful ‘‘Have You Seen Her”. Unfortunately, this collection deals only with their work from the 70’s, but it’s stiH strong, enthralling soul music. Tyrone Davis was another struggling blues singer when he had a fluke top-ten smash TYith ‘‘Can I Change My Mind”. Though more of a ballad styled vocalist, Davis' music has an urgency that runs throughout that gives all the tracks on Greatest Hits punch. An added plus to his

music is the tight backing from his support band arid the fiei:y hprn arrangements. Tyrone Davis hasn’t done as well 1 on the pop charts as he’s deserved, but he’s been a consistent force on soul stations and from listing to this it’s easy to understand why. The reactivated Chess label has a stunning compilation by The Dells. Their sweet harmonies are a joy to hear, especially on the soulful ballads. Most of these tracks — like “Oh What A Night”, “Stay In My Corner", and “Always Together” — got plenty of Airtime in this area so they should be familiar. It’s nice to have such fine music by The Dells available. Chess also has out a
strong collection of hits by the late Billy Stewart. These tracks have plenty of life and vitality, thanks to the energy Stewart put out into each performance. Needless to say, his biggest hit, “Summertimr\ is included, but all these stand up wel). Billy Stewart’s music was always fun to listen to and it’s about time someone paid tribute to this fine talent.
