vade the Vet with baseball knowledge. Something the Phils seem to lack. This lack of knowledge is the only reason the Phillies will not repeat as Champs in the National League East next season. They will go with younger players and that is wise. The only move left is to ship Garr Maddox off somewhere. Maddox was the only player I have ever heard say he would like to be traded after one World Series game in which he was the hero. With the young-movement under way, the Phils should go all the way and trade Maddox. Unlike the Rose and Morgan moves, the Phillies should get a pretty good ball player in return for the golden-glove center fielder. Maddox could be the ticket to the third starter the Phillies so desperately need. • • • • I GUESS I’ve said

Lower Cape May last week did to Atlantic City what everybody else has been doing this season — '■Jjeat'em. L^ver.'s 10-6 victory, gave it a 4-2-2 record good enough for third place in Division II of the CapeAtlantic League. Wildwood won its first' game, running over hapless Absegami, 18-2. Both now have 1-6 records and share the Division II cellar. The optimist might say they share next-to-last place, too Middle Township was held scoreless by Oakcrest, losing 24-0. Middle is in sixth place in Division II. In a battle for third spot in Division I, OSean City was edged 7-6 by Vineland. Vineland is now 5-2; OC 5-3. FOLLOWING every major league baseball season, house cleaning seems to be the next order of business. / The Philadelphia Phillies

must have hired an entire cleaning crew.. First, vet Pete Rose received his walking papers. Then, the league’s top second fiddle, Bobby Wine, got the ax. And firfelly Joe Morgan asked for and got his release from the team that no longer needed him. The release of Rose and Morgan was expected, but the firing of Wine was not. The Phils say they want to have John Felske in the spot Wine has held down for the past three managers. I wonder if Felske, fresh out of the Portland system, can make all the decisions with Paul Owens wondering what to do. Once again, the Phillies can’t make the critical decision when they have to. They had their minds set on Felske to take over and it will cost them in the end. Wine will hook up with some other ball club, as a manager I hope, and*in-

enough about the Phillies; it now is time to look at the true Champions, the 76ers. The Sixers got off to a shaky start even though they were winning. The games just didn't show me the ability the team has. Maybe it’s the early season problems all teams go through. I only hope that’s what it is. THE N.B.A. REFEREE strike is also a factor in the slow start for most clubs. They had to learn to play ball under different rules or lack of rules. On one evening I checked the box scores for games played with the substitute referee. There were nine games played and a total of 19 technical fouls were called and five players were ejected for either fighting or abuse. The game is rough, but not too rough when it is played under the right supervision. The Sixers will be alright though. They have the bench this year that is even better than last. The real treat is the addition of

CAPE MAY — The initial match of the Men’s Recreational Volleyball League paired Dekelco against Keen’s Plumbing and Heating. In game one Keen’s jumped off to an early 6-2 leal, but Dekelco came storming back to take the lead at 8-6 and then went on to win the game 153 as Harry Thomas served for five consecutive points. Dekelco jumped off to an early 3-0 lead in game two and then fell behind Keen’s as Don Shifferdecker dealt out 6 consecutive points while serving and Keen’s won the game going away 15-3. The final game was •much of the same as Keen's jumped out to an early lead and never looked back to win 15-9. The second match featured league leader Breakwater Electric going up against the Wrecking Crew. In the first game Breakwater exploded in an awesome offensive display to take the lead at 12-1. The Wrecking Crew gave Breakwater a run for its, money with good team hustle but Breakwater’s all around good court coverage and nicely placed sets of Terry Brown gave them as easy win at 15-7. Breakwater went on to win game-three 15-5 and shut out the Wrecking Crew 3 games to 0. The final match pitted the U.S.C.G. Air Station Groupies against Eckel's Diesel. In the first game these two evenly matched teams traded points early on until Eckel’s surged ahead to take a 14-6 lead and eventually win the game at 15-10. In game two the Groupies overcame Eckel's stiff defense with consistent serving and all around teamwork to win the game 15-10. In game three Eckel’s was victorious (15-10) despite the Groupies' team hustle and diving saves.

Sedale Theatt. He can play and proved he could take a punch in the pre-season boxing match with Boston. It should be fun to watch the class of the league repeat as Champs. THE FLYERS are another team that has made serious changes and it is beginning to show on the ice. Their only problem over the past* few seasons has been that incredible urge to falter in the playoffs. This may be the season that even post-season play will go well for the orange and black. The trade of Ron Flockhart to the Pittsburgh Penguins was long overdue. Flocky-hockey was just that. One man playing hockey by himself.. Flockhart never passed the puck when he felt he had even a slim chance to score. The addition of Rich Sut ter is a can’t miss deal. He passes the puck, plays hard and with five brothers in the N.H.L. the name will carry him. By the way, Ed Snider sold the cable channel he owned in Philadelphia for a cool (30 million. Snider owns the Flyers and may very well be the next owner of the Philadelphia Eagles. SPEAKING OF the Eagles, it seems the team has been put back about eight years somehow. The team that visited the Super Bowl a few years back looks like the Eagles of those .500 years. Head coach Marion Campbell might have to hire the cleaning crew the Phillies are now employing and make the change that has been needed for a couple of years. First to get the broom — quarterback Ron Jaworski. I'm not saying that Jaws

is the only reason that the Eagles share the same house as the Baltimore Colts, but he has never proven himself a winner. Winning starts at the top. Sorry to say, the highest paid players are at the top. One parting shot in this Philadelphia sports column. I was overjoyed with the selection of John Denny as the National League Cy Young award winner. Denny has overcome many problems in his life, and this year he turned to God and friend Steve Carlton. Whatever did it, Denny pitched the Phils to the World Series. Even though the Phils might not be back for a while, it was fun. Thanks, John Denny. Trivia Time: Who^was the only 300-game Winner in baseball never to win the Cy Young award? Answer: Cy Young.
