Help Sought On Tagging

ABSECON - Commercial and recreational crabbers are urged to help the N.-J. DEP make its blue crab tagging program a success. The tagging program is designed to provide information on seasonal movements of New Jersey’s crabs. Blue Crab tagging, which began in Great Bay and the Mullica River in Atlantic County, has expanded to areas of Atlantic and Ocean Counties, especially in Barnegat Bay, Little Egg Harbor Bay, and Great Egg Harbor Bay. Crabs are being tagged with either a small yellowplastic tag inserted through the rear part of the shell or a yellow plastic oval tag wired across the tack from spine to spine. Some crabs have both type of tags. In order for this program to be successful, crabbers are asked to report any tagged blue crabs, by recording the tag number (two tag numbers if both tags are present), the date, the location where caught,

and measuring the crab across the back from spine to spine. Then send this informatiorkto:, New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, Nacote Creek Marine Fisheries Laboratory, Star Route, Absecon, 08201 or call (609) 441-3292.
