Plastic Seaweed To Build Beaches

STONE HARBOR -- A variety of plastic seaweed will, the borough hopes, arrest and reverse the erosion of its beaches. The program to rebuild the beaches got under way Oct. 31. SEASCAPE synthetic seaweed is being installed at the Stone Harbor Point by Meekins Construction Co. of Hatteras, N.C.. in a series of underwater rows stretching nearly one^half mile. Working much like an underwater snowfence. SEASCAPE is designed to reduce wave energy.

installation of over one mile of SEASCAPE in October, 1982 have built up several hundred feet of new beach and have given the historic lighthouse its critically needed protection. The Stone Harbor project is to be funded principally by the State of New Jersey. The fully installed cost of SEASCAPE will be under $50*per ocean front foot of protected beach, far below the cost of conventional beach control techniques. To follow soon after the Stone Harbor installation will be another SEASCAPE
