Long after the arcades and summertime attractions of the other beach towns along the Jersey shore have closed and shuttered their shops, Cape May, at the southern tip of the state, is still welcoming visitors. It used to be that “The Season” at Cape May ran from the Fourth of July to Labor Day in the 19th Century, and more recently from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, but now Cape May is a timeless Victorian village, and when one season ends, the townspeople embark on another with enthusiasm, capitalizing on the variety the village has to offer guests. Stretching twenty miles out to sea on a peninsula of land, Cape May is blessed

with a climate that rarely becomes extremely hot or cold, and major highways and means of public transportation serve the community year ‘round. CAPE MAY IS also a step back in time, holding the distinction of being the oldest seashore resort in the United States. Today it is an oasis of ambiance and a refuge from the hectic 20th-Century lifestyle. It offers a place to relax in any season, to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean which laps at its beaches for swimming in the summer or strolling along the windswept beach in the winter. It also offers visitors an opportunity to view the largest collection of authentic frame Victorian structures in the nation, buildings which residents are proudly restoring, both inside and out, to their former glory, complete with Victorian paint colors in many shades and hues. Visitors to Cape May from Columbus Day to Mother’s Day will find many shops and accommodations to serve them. The festivities of the holiday season include the popular annual Christmas Candlelight Walk on the Washington Street Shopping Mall Thursday, Dec. 15. The village is decorated to enthrall young and old. Victorian guest houses and country inns which welcome guests to Cape May year ‘round include The Brass Bed, Captain Mey’s Inn, The Dormer House, The Gingerbread House, Hanson House, The Manor House, The Queen Victoria, The Seventh Sister, and The Victorian Rose.

A variety of modern accommodations are available at the Atlas, Golden Eagle, Madison, Marquis de Lafayette, Surf and West Cape motels. In addition to many restaurants in nearby towns and villages, several well-known Cape May restaurants welcome diners year ‘round, including the Atlas’ Crystal Room, C-View Tavern, The Gold Whale at the Marquis de Lafayette , (except December), The Golden Eagle, The Lobster House, Louisa’s (through December), The Ocean View, Pier House, Stumpo’s Pizza, Ugly Mug, and The Winchester (except January and February).
