Blackfish or tautog, which ever name you call them, they are fun to catch, frustrarihg at times and above all. they are excellent when served on the table While some tautog are caught in the vicinity of jetties, piers, bridge abutments and bulkheads, most blackfish are caught on party boats which specialize in fishing over bits of wreckage on the
bottom
It is the nature of the blackfish which keeps it from becoming a staple in the market Not a pretty fish, the tautog lives around rocks and wreckage, and its habitat makes it virtually impossible to create a commercial fishery for them. Most fishermen never catch blackfish. They tend to look down on this lowly creature which ranges from Nova Scotia down to South Carolina. Most blackfish are found in the northern sector from Delaware to Nova Scotia. Blackfish have obvious identifying traits. They have blunt snouts, thick lips and protruding chisellike teeth which are used for scraping shellfish, barnacles and marine growth from the rocks and wreckage where they take
cover.
TOG ARE mostly black but the younger tog are more brownish in color. The best baits for blackfish are green crabs, sand fleas, fidler crabs or pieces of clam If you have a hankering to try blackfish action, no better time than

now is available. Since most are caught from party boats which take out to the wrecks where the blackfish hide and feed, that's a good starting point. November and early December are good blackfish months, as are the spring months of late March, April and May. June is good, too if the water temperature stays down below 60 degrees. Why now is such a good time can best be explained by the presence of large amounts of sea bass and porgies which have invaded the wrecks. As long as the bass and porgies remain around the wrecks, tautog will be incidental in the overall since there is a knack to catching them. Sophisticated electronics on most party boats allow the skippers to put the boat position right over the :kage on the bottom. Placing the anchor so that the boat is in proper position requires knowledge of the effect of wind and tide. A few feet off and few, if any, fish will be caught. Many wreck-oriented party boat skippers have ‘little black books’ in which they record every bit of wreckage they can find within their fishing range from port All good skippers we know have a few ‘‘secret'' snags which they save for that occasional day when they need some fish to save the day. THE ALL-TACKLE world record tautog was caught June 12, 1954 by R.N. Sheafer. That fish was mounted and for years it was on display in Ed McFaall’s tackle shop in Cape May, across from what is now South Jersey Marina. Perhaps someone may know where that mount is located. Hopefully it is being preserved. Most party boats do not provide special blackfish bait. If you plan a tautog trip, check with the skipper to see what is provided. If you want anything special, you'll have to bring it aboard yourself. Take along a good supply of hooks in the No. 4 to 2/0 sizes. Also take lots of sinkers. You’re going to lose tackle in the wreckage Our blackfish rigs are made up with leader material which tests below the strength of the line we fish with. If we do get snagged (and we get snagged plenty) our reasoning is that the leader to the hook will break first, leaving our rig and sinker
intact.
Use a party boat rod with a medium to stiff action. Load the reel with 30 to 40 lb. test line. If you do not have a rod the party boat has a supply for rental. SHARK CLUB WINNERS: The winners in the 1983 New Miami Inn Shark Club annual tournament were announced at a recent club dinner at the Inn in Wildwood Villas. Ray McGoldrick, of Philadelphia won the first place trophy for his 247-lb. mako shark. Second prize was awarded to Ernie Nobels of Wildwood Villas for his 142-lb. mako. Ed Basic of North Cape May won third prize with a 140-lb. sand bar shark and fourth place was won by Bob Metzger of
Philadelphia with a 120-lb.
mako shark.
BLUEFISH TOURNAMENT: While the current bluefish season is far from over, anglers are alrelady thinking about the 1984 season. Date for the World's Largest Bluefish Tournament has been announced by Joe Laitrello, president of.Smithville Inn. Laitrell'o said the Smithvilie Inn, which sponsors the event, will be pulling out all the stops to make the 1984 event the biggest, the richest and the most talked about fishing event on the Jersey Coast. Over 200 boats are expected to compete in the bluefish event, which has been set for Saturday, July 21, with the tournament headquarters at Capt. Andy’s Marina in Margate. The tournament is somewhat unique in that it is open to boats of all sizes — from outboard to sleek offshore fishermdfr Everyone can participate. Complete plans for the bluefish event will be announced in 1984. Capt. Ralph Stork of Capt Andy’s Marina said plans will include more features, more prizes and more opportunities to compete in the
1984 event.
BLUEFISH ARE at their peak in mid-July and anglers are restricted to entering only eight of the fish they catch. Fish are given one point per pound and the total weight of the eight fish determine the winners. A dramatic shotgun start at the Great Egg Inlet sets off the oneday fishing event. WINTER CHORES. Lots of the refinements which make your fishing better come from the little things you can do in the off seasorr. Here’s one tip which may save a cut hand which results when your knife slips. Many of the fine filet knives which are sold and used for cleaning fish Treatment Project SEABROOK - The State of New Jersey, along with seven other states, has been chosen to participate in a demonstration project which will provide Medicare/Medicaid coverage for alcoholism treatment services in freestanding facilities, such as Seabrook House in Cumberland County. Prior to this project. Medicare and Medicaid paid for alcoholism services only in hospitals, mental health clinics, and to private practitioners. Medicare/Medicaid will reimburse Seabrook House based upon the cost of treatment, as they do other health service providers. The project will evaluate the cost differences between free-standing facilities and the aforementioned alternatives. THE OVERHEAD in hospitals and in other traditional treatment providers, is much higher than it is in free-standing facilities.
This project is being administered by the New Jersey Health Care Financing Administration
Alcoholism Project.
end up as a dangerous weapon when they become wet and slippery from fish blood and slime. We have a couple of these knives and we helped protect ourselves and anyone else who picks them up by wrapping a knob of black plastic tape around the
knife just below where the blade and the handle meet. The knob should be big enough to keep your hand from sliding down the handle. You can also roughen up the handle by grinding grooves in it on the shop grinding wheel.
