Fighting Irish Fight Off 100 to Get Mary
Two guys got together a few years back and put a magazine together on the best basketball players in high school and college. Street and Smith now have the most relied-on publication whfen it comes to round-ball. If you have a chance to see this year’s magazine, Mary Gavin of Wildwood Catholic is included. She was named to the fourth team AllAmerica squad. Although her senior year is No. 1 on the priority list right now, Gavin made her intentions clear recently on where shp will be spending her time in the future. That will be South Bend, Ind. Gavin Signed a letter-of-intent with Notre Dame to play basketball for the Fighting Irish. The Irish bested more thaa^lOO schools in getting the services of the top point guard in South Jersey and, according to Street and Smith, in the nation. Gavin, 17, takes a 22.7 scoring average into her senior year with hopes on improving on the Crusaders 25-2 mark of a year ago. Gavin spends much of her spare time at the recreation center in North Wildwood-playing basketball with some of the best players in the area. I have had many chances to play with and against Mary over the past two years and I feel she could handle herself on any college squad. Another Cape May County standout has decided where she would like to play college ball. Shelly Ridgeway signed a full scholarship with East Carolina University. Ridgeway has played mostly at the forward position for the Middle Township Panthers over the past few years, buy expects to move to guard in college. Ridgeway, ranked third in her academic class, averages 15.9 points per game and 9.4 rebounds. Some 35 schools recruited the 5-foot-8 player including Stanford, Boston University, Brown and Harvard. SINCE WE ARE on the topic of basketball, plans for the Seagull Classic in Atlantic City have been completed. Most attention
is centered on the boys teams which represent some of the best teams in the East. On the girl’s slate,, Wildwood Catholic will make the trip up the Parkway taking on Holy Spirit in the first round. The Crusaders will tip-off in the second game Dec. 28 at 6:45 p.m. The 10th annual Classic will be held at Holy Spirit High School in Absecon. AN INTERESTING thing happened on the cross-country circuit last week. Ocean City and Cumberland ran to a 28-all tie. Jeff Davis of Cumberland High School topped Ocean City’s Gene Watts by eight seconds to win the match. Other top finishers for O.C. included Paul lannance, Rob Bond and Cliff Schlacter. Ocean City’s record stands at yfe-l on the
In girl’s action, Melody Sye led the way as she and her Ocean City teammates swept past Bridgeton and Vineland in cross-country action. Sye bested the field by more than 90 seconds in the win and Ocean City upped its record to 10 wins' and 2 loses with the double victory. THE CITY OF CAPE MAY is in need of volunteers to act as coaches for youth basketball and hockey teams. Not much time is required for these activities, so anyone who can spare' it is greatly needed. This is a great way to help youngsters progress in athletic activities. ••• What is all this we are hearing about Jim Brown coming out of retirement if someone passes his career rushing mark? Sounds like the man is either on one big ego trip or maybe he needs money. Brown was the best in his day, but don’t they always say records are made to be broken? Brown has been out of the game for 18 years. The only good he could possibly do, is drum up publicity for himself and maybe break a few 47-year-old bones. Stay at home, Jim, and work on your acting skills.
IT SEEMS everybody gets up for a game with the World Champions. Case-in-point, the Atlanta Hawks against the Sixers. The Hawks were looking to get to .500 on the season and played as if the game would mean life or death. I know athletes usually play better against better opposition, but that contest was ridiculous. The Hawks slammed with authority and blocked every shot in sight. I guess that’s the price one has to pay to be the very best.
Clinic Set
COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County 4-H Horse Council Fall Equine Deworming Clinic for all horse and pony owners in the county it will be held Saturday, Dec. 3. The cooperating veterinarian is Dr. Robert Newman, B.V.S.C., whose sole practice is equines. The veterinarian will be at the first location at 6:30 a.m. This year Dr. Newman stated that there does not have to be minimum number of horses at any particular stop. However, in filling in the registration form, owners are asked to give exact directions to their locations. Call the Cooperative Extension Service to request forms for registration. HERE ARE a reasons to participate in this clinic: 1. Worming your horse or pony by tube, or injectable medicine, insures maximum utilization of the worming medicine; 2. It is recommended that you tube worm your animal at least once per year. 3. The veterinarian will use non - Benzimidazole drugs because of certain parasite resistance to Benzimidazole (BZD) drugs. Also, 4. Even if you have been worming your animal every two months with (BZD) drugs, your animal may still be heavily infested with parasites; 5. Price is reasonable because the veterinarian is doing a large number of animals that particular day. 6.
