From a Little Room, Local Interest Rates

By JOSEPH R. ZELNIK “They all go into a little room and then they come out and tell us." That’s the way a teller at a Cape May County financial institution described how interest rates are determined on insured money market accounts and their partners, the socalled “Super Nows." The fancy term is “management decision,” but what it means is that bank and savings and loan officials take a look at the competition and pick a number. There is one local exception. Ocean City Home Savings & Loan pegs its rate to Friday’s local Federal Funds Rate, the fee banks charge each other for overnight reserve lending.
