WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressmen Bill Hughes (D-NJ) and Edwin Forsythe (R-NJ) have introduced legislation which would phase out the ocean dumping of harmful sewage sludge off the coast of New Jersey, and provide for the development of long-range water quality and waste disposal planning in the New York/New Jersey area. The New Jersey Congressmen, both members

of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee, called the legislation a major step forward in protecting the State’s coastal resources, and in laying a foundation necessary for the overall improvement of coastal water quality in the area. The legislation introduced by Hughes and Forsythe calls for a phase-out of ocean dumping of sewage sludge at the 12-mile site off the coast of Sandy Hook.
