MUA Gets Largest EPA Award
SWAINTON - The Cape May County Municipal Untiiities Authority accepted $61.3 million in federal wastewater construction grant funds Nov. 9 which represent the largest U.S. EPA award for New Jersey projects in the past two
years.
According to MUA executive director George Marinakis, the funds are for wastewater facility construction in thd Seven Mile Beach/Middle and the Wildwoods/Lower regions and represent a total of 67 percent grant funding for the two regional wastewater construction projects. "We are extremely pleased by this award — it was a long time coming,” Marinakis said. “It is particularly gratifying because the EPA grant funding has been obtained during a period of cutbacks in the lederal funding program while at the same time the number o^ wastewater projects in the state of New Jersey has increased.” THE MUA commissioners echoed Marinakis’ pleasure. “This is very good news, and it is certainly worth noting that this is the E^A’s largest grant award in New Jersey for 1982 or 1983,” said Commissioner James Busha. The lengthy grant application process which led
to the funding began in March of 1982 when the New Jersey DEP decided to segment the construction phases of the two regions to enable reduced federal funding to cover more wastewater projects in the state. According to Marinakis, the projects were elevated on the state’s funding priority list because of the recognized pollution problems and the anticipated water quality benefits that will result from the construction of these regional
systems.
THE WASTEWATER treatment facilities to be constructed under the initial segment for the Wildwoods/Lower Service Region provides for the construction of a new primary treatment plant including sludge handling facilities, four regional
pumping stations and regional force mains to enable the flow from the existing treatment plans in North Wildwood, Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest to be conveyed to the new regional treatment facility and an ocean outfall extending approximately one mile off Jefferson Ave. in Wildwood Crest. In the Seven Mile Beach/Middle Service Region, the initial segment comprises three regional pumping stations and the required interconnecting pipelines to enable the flows from the existing treatment plants in Sea Isle City, Avalon, and Stone Harbor to be conveyed to an ocean outfall to be constructed off 30th St. in the Borough of Avalon. This outfall would also be approximately one mile long.
