COURT HOUSE - The County Library has on view an exhibit from the New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, entitled “The Dreigroshchen Film; The Threepenny Opera” until Dec. 31. Based on the film version of the “Threepedny Opera,” written by Bertolt Brecht and scored by Kurt Weil, the prints consist of etchings by Jack Levine. The "Threepenny Opera,” which introduced the still popular song, “Mack the

Knife," opened in Berlin Aug. 31, 1928. Set in the, criminal underworld, the comic opera spoofed the shady side Qf man’s existence. IN 1931 the opera was made into a film directed by G. W. Pabst and featuring Lotte Lenya as Jenny. Lenya’s portrayal has been called a filmdom classic. The film production inspired Levine’s portfolio. Jenny, Mack the Knife, Tiger Brown and the girls of Tunbridge Alley consort within these etchings which range from amusing to semi-tragic. Jack Levine, the son of an immigrant shoemaker from Lithuania, was bom in 1915 in Boston. His initial interest in art was aroused by Harold Zimmerman, a young art teacher in Boston’s West End Community Center, who encouraged the young Levine to draw from memory rather than models, an approach he still uses. Levine’s first works portraying the scenes of his neighborhood, were the summation of his personal experiences captured in dreamlike expression. In later years be was moved by various causes, and his works became social statements that continued to convey his direct involvement with his environment.
