In the ordinary, everyday towns ahd cities, folks who like to watch and kibitz sweating construction workers are known as ‘ ‘ s i d e w a ,1 k superintendents." Bub- in our unique environment, they are “boardwalk superintendents.’* And they have plenty to watch this season. Construction is under way to replace the fireravaged sections at both Roberts and Garfield Avenues. A longtime landmark, the Beach Plaza Hotel is being demolished at Pine Avenue on the “wooden way." “Snow White," the highly successful Lincoln Avenue .Boardwalk establishment, is adding another addition. Among other things, “Snow White" is famo'us for 40-cent hot dogs on a promenande where such bargains are few and far between. Wort crews are always busy at the great amusement piers owned by Hunts and Moreys. The top-flight establishments run by these folks are a far cry from the old overnight carnivals. But the best news of all may be in the offing for Boardwalk lovers — 'its said the new owners of Sportland Pier plan to make it a facility comparable to the best amusement centers anywhere. By the way, did you know that Boardwalk should always be capitalized because it is the official name of a street? The new City Council clearly has a busy winter ahead with pressure mounting for a Pacific Avenue Mall, Convention Hall and Boardwalk improvements. From the band shell to rest rooms, city facilities need a face lifting on the ’walk. Vandals have wrecked a few more benches. Free “bubblers” or water fountains should be restored from the shuffleboard courts park to those missing outside comfort stations. Many ’walk litter baskets are so old they look as if they’re held together with rust and cellophane tape. • • • E X - N O R T H WILDWOOD Lifeguard Richie Phillips, now of Avalon, is the attorney for the National Basketball Association referees. At a recent N.B.A. game, Phillips handed out free whistles to the fans to confuse the scabbing referees. It certainly did. It sounds like an old lifeguard trick. Where did Richie get all 1 those Acme Thunderer whistles? • • • Lots of Cape May County folks know Mrs. Virginia Knauer, but many do not know what her important job is for Unde Sam. A long-time Sea Isle City colonist, Mrs. Knauer is President Reagan’s national Director of Consumer Affairs, a post she also held in Nixon’s administration. • • • CHICAGO’S DONNA LEE is a new permanent resident. She’s a teacher of special education at Pitman High. Donna has a nifty idea to help keep Wildwood lifeguard mascott John Navin, Jr’s TV opus, “Jennifer Slept Here" afloat for a season or two. Donna thinks they should use celebrity lookalike “ghost stars,” such as W.C. Fields, Mae West, Clark Gable, Bogart and Mark Twain. Jennifer could conjure up all kinds

of interesting deceased folks to help young Navin grow up TV style. Debbie Reynolds will probably be a regular as a bumbling grandmother ghost. • • • LOCAL LASS Lori Vandergrift, recently graduated from Maryland’s Towson State, hopes to teach physical education in the county. • • • TOM PARSONS, ad-

The Wildwoods Charles V. Mathis

ministrator of the Motel Association, is among those interested in proposals to protect resort businesses from losses due to earlier school openings The increasing severity of

the early school openings problem has led some establishments on Cape Cod to stop hiring collegeage summer workers. Missouri has become the first state to enact a law

mandating a delay in school openings until after Labor Day, after tourism groups lobbied effectively, arguing that more than $20-million in sales were lost as .a result of the earlier school openings Minnesota tourism solons comment: “A return to the once traditional Memorial Day to Labor Day school calendar is too good an idea to ignore." Cape May County

tourism officials hope to persuade the powers-that-be that moving school openings back to after Labor Day will benefit everyone avoiding the early exodus of seasonal workers to families trying to plan summer vacations. . s.
