Without a doubt the most exciting album I’ve heard all year has been the recently released debut album by Los Angeles’ The Rain Parade. Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (Enigma, P.0. Box 2896 Torrance, CA. 90509) is a beautiful record, showing a very talented group to have the potential of being a maJ° r J»P force. The Rain Parade have'been lumped into the new psychedelic movement and it’s true their music has that colorful sound. Basically, The Rain Parade succeed because of the intricate guitar work of David Roback and Matthew Piucci. This team definately works well together as they produce a melodic backing to the overwhelmingly hypnotic melodies. Filling in the holes nicely is Will Glenn, who gives Ihe Rain Parade added depth witrfhis unique organ chording and violin playing. I don’t want to go too overboard about this record, but The Rain Parade are off to a fine start and I hope some of my readers will pick up their majestic sounds. ALSO FROM Los Angeles, but not sounding at all like The Rain Parade is the heavy metal outfit Motley Crue. They second release, Shrut At The Devil (Elektra, has some fiery guitar leads and a powerhouse rhythm section to keep things interesting, despite the fact no new ground is broken. Motley Crue are one of the
better American heavy metal bands around and their success seems enspred. Not getting as much media attention as the comeback by The Animals is the return to the spotlight of the great sixties rocker Mitch Ryder. Never Kick A Sleeping Dog (Riva/Polygram) is a well balanced collection of soulful rockers sung with plenty of enthusiasm and passion. Mitch Ryder is in fine voice, his backing band hot, and the selection
of tunes consistent. It’s nice to have him back. Finally, that spunky little indie out of Los Angeles, Rhino (1201 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica, CA. 99404) has done it again reissuing two compilations of vintage bubblegum smashes. Now I know many of you probably don’t see the value in hits like “Yummy Yummy Yummy,” and “Chewy Chewy,’’ “Indian Giver,”' “Simon Says,” and my personal favorite, “Beg Borrow & Steal," but this was a fun, upbeat genre
