Seeks Ban On N-Waste Dumping
WASHINGTON, D C. - Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ) has introduced legislation directing the U.S. State Department to seek strong international controls on the disposal of high-level radioactive wastes in the ocean floor. The South Jersey lawmaker explained that the burial of wastes in the ocean floor, known as subseabed emplacement, is intended to isolate the wastes from the marine environment for thousands of years. But Hughes warned that “we have a situation of placing the cart before the horse. Sub-seabed emplacement technology is still unproven, since it has not yet been used to dispose of radioactive wastes.” “Before we proceed with depositing highly-radio-active wastes in the ocean floor, we need to make certain that the oceans are adequately protected from the threat of pollution by highly-toxic and persistent radioactive wastes.
