Drinking in Homes Tops, Survey Shows

N. WILDWOOD - Where’s the favorite place .for Cape May County residents to down a few beers, drink a highball, or sip a little wine? Home, that’s where, says Lynda Scanlon, president of the County Licenced Beverage Association. Scanlon, at a recent meeting of the association, cited a survey conducted by National Family Opinion Inc., which shows that nationwide, more than half the beer, wine and liquor consumed in the United States is imbibed at home. An additional 12 percent of the total volume was consumed at another person’s home, the survey showed. Thes figures, said Scanlon, indicate that "a giant misconception exists when it comes to alcoholic beverage consumption in bars, taverns and restaurants”. “ONLY 10^ PERCENT of all wine and distilled spirits consumed in this country and 4^ percent of malt beverages are consumed in restaurants,” Scanlon stated, “and this is served in conjunction with a meal." "About 3 percent of the wine and about 12% percent of the total amount of beer and liquor are consumed in taverns and bars," she noted This figure is less than the amount of these beverages served to guest in people’s homes, and about one fifth of the amount consumed in their own homes." The members of the County Licensed Beverage Association, representing bars, taverns and restaurants licensed for public consumption are doing their part to insure the safety of their guests and the public at large in the fight against alcohol abuse. The CMCLBA has, in cooperation with the New Jersey Council on Alcoholism, set up an “alcohol awareness program”. Part of that program includes seminars for bartenders, waiters and waitress’ to make these employees aware of any potential , problems, and how to handle and prevent them. “Our seminars have been very well received
