Bob Dylan’s new album, Infidels (Columbia), is the best thing he’s issued since the mid-60’s. Dylan’s sound is pure folk-rock, with potent melodies strong musical support from his backing band, and excellent lead vocals. Unlike his more recent efforts, the songwriting is consistent (not one bad cut on the album), which should be the main reason for him to return to the spotlight. Bob Dylan is back and while he's no longer an angry young man, he’s still got plenty to sing about. Easily one of the best releases of the year. Passionworks (Epic) by Heart doesn't break any new ground, but it’s still strong enough to please their many fans. While some of the songs seem a bit dire, the group usually overcomes any problems with Ann Wilson’s powerful vocals and solid guitar breaks. “How Can I Refuse” is a fine single and should do well on the charts. Heart are one of the better mainStr^am rock groups performing^nd this is a more than-pbssable piece of work. Rebel Yell (Chrysalis) is the new one by Billy Idol and it should help him stay on the charts. This collection of mostly high energy, yet melodic rock is perfect for today’s radio and MTV. Pete Townshend's kid brother Simon has relased his debut album Sweet Sound (Polydor). This is a good start, as his songwriting, vocals, and performance are consistent, but it doesn’t take off because it lacks a strong single. Simon Towrfehend obviously has talent and isn’t cashing in on his brother’s fame (if that was his objective, he would’ve done it earlier) but I'm afraid this album won’t find him the audience he deserves. Maybe, next time Simon Townshend will come up with a magical tune that will make people take notice of him. Keep an eye on him. Finally, avoid at*all costs the debut mini-album, After Hours (Atlantic) by The Velveteen. This is inane modern dance rock at its absolute worst. I find it hard to believe a group without any personality could get a deal.
