Versatile Bucktail First Among Lures\ 6ftj-L If I had to select one lure Itisaday.saverformany As for my very favorite do hot remember. The tance. lure action, rate of

If I had to select one lure on which I had to stake my survival in times of duress. I would select the weighted lead hed jig (commonly called a bucktail in these parts) This lure is no more than a painted or unpainted . lead head molded over a hook to which feathers, plastic skirting or natural bucktail hair is affixed to add motion and allure to

this universal-lure.

On bucktails. fishermen have caught just about every kind of fish that swims in both fresh and \salt water Add a plastic ster tail or some pork r d and the bucktail I Jpmes even deadlier,

It is a day.saver for many

fishermen who turn to the bucktail when all else fails and when the fish are not cooperating. So effective.is the bucktail that when the survival kits were designed for life rafts and lifeboats during World War II it was selected as THE lure that was included in the survival kits. Many a downed airman or crewman from a sunken ship enjoyed meals which might have saved them from starvation because they were able to catch fish with bucktails

from the survival kits. • BUCKTAILS I have fish-

ed with «-ange in size from J/32 ounce all the way to five ounce monsters I used to pick up weakfish from 90 to 100 feet of water inhedvy tide in the Chesapeake Bay I have boiight and made numerous bucktails. lost many of those big fish that always get away and lots and lots of them to rocks and bridge abutments over the years. Bucktails have been a good

fish producerJor me.

As for my very favorite lure, I might vote for the buckUil because it is so versa t ie and because it has been'SO good to me. I would be hard pressed to bypass a lesser known (at least in salt water) lure for

the Flatfish.

Unless.you have delved a little, into fresh water fishing, the Flatfish might not be too well known to you. I- can t remember when I jrst heard about the Flatfish. I was very young. The lure first took prominence in 1933 shortly after it was invented and perfee ed by Charlie Helin, foundc r of the Helin Tackle Compahy, in Detroit, Mich. I might have heard about the Flatfish soon after that through reading volumes of material pn fishing (magazines cost a lot less in those days). I read everything I could get my hands on regarding fishing, and sent for every free catalog I could scrape up postage for. I probably had more catalogs in those days than anyone. Most I

do hot remember. The Helin Catalog is one I do. I JUST CAME across one which probably is postWorld War II vintage. I keep it as I keep a lot of other things — as reminders'df'days in the past, I suppose. • On the front cover is a photo of Charlie Helin smiling at a giant Flatfish, and models of the Swimmerspoon and the Fishcake, two other lures he invented. Charlie always reminded me of Paul Whiteman. That’s easy to do because I never really met either of them and have only photos to go

on

In the catalog there are stories about Charlie’s fishing experiences. He took planes into remote areas in Canada and caught alftcinds of fish I could only dream and read about. He loaded the catalog with page after page of copy and page after page of photos of big fish, all caught on Helin lures, naturally. He discussed hook size, color impor-

tance, lure action, rate of retrieve and the results of m u c h o f h i s*

experimentation.

I never owned a Flatfish

until after World War II because I never could afford one, nor did I have a rod and reel to cast one. Cane pole fishing was what I grew up with in those twilight-of-the-depression days. I did acquire -some Flatfish after I returned home from the service, and caught some fresh water fish with them as soon as I could afford a rod and reel. I can’t remember the first fish I ever caught on a Flatfish, but I can remember that I caught a lot of fish on

them over the years. But what I miss most, I

guess, is the old tackle company promotions which sold by whetting the angler appetite by presenting catalogs as old Charlie used to do. They have been replaced with modem merchandising where the lure is packaged and put out on the counter to be sold by
