(From Page 34) only chance I had to see them play, the football was of good quality. The USFL continued to rob the^NFL of good players and should have even a better year in 1984. BACK TO BASEBALL for a minute. The American League finally got the old monkey off its back in the All-Star game. Fred Lynn hit a grandslam, the first ever in a mid-season classic, to provide the Junior Circuit with a 13 to 3 win. The win broke an 11 game win streak by the Nationals. The game also marked the 50th anniversary of the classic. Tennis lost two things this year when Bjorn Borg retired. It lost a great player, maybe the greatest ever, and it ended the BorgJohn McEnroe match-ups that tennis fans were treated to over therpast few years. Borg said he lost his fighting spirit but his new bride and the money he alreadjr'made probably had a lot to do with his retirement. cup ending a America hold on the trophy that had lasted since 1851. Trailing 3-1 in races, the Aussies took advantage of equipment problems on the “Liberty” to win the final three races. In the final race, the “Austrailia 11” won by just 43 seconds, ending the longest winning streak in sports. THE PHILADELPHIA Flyers made it to the first round of the playoffs only to get bounced by the New York Rangers. The other N.Y. team, the Islanders, won the Stanley Cup for the fourth straight time, in a season that saw Wayne Gretzky set alf kinds of records for scoring. All-in-all it was a pretty good year in sports. Now if we can get a few things straightened out we could look forward to a better year in 1984. Drugs, the biggest problem now, has already scared next years sporting events.
