Murphy Co. Income Up

MCKEESPORT, Pa. - G.C. Murphy Co. has reported net income for the 13 weeks ended Oct. 27, of $4,788,000, or $1.18 per share, compared with $2,855,000, or $.72 per share for the corresponding period ending Oct. 28, 1982. For the first 39 weeks of fiscal 1983 net income was $11,165,000 or $2.78 per share compared with $4,813,000, or $1.22 per share, for the similar period of fiscal 1982. Net income for the 39-week period of fiscal 1983 includes a non-taxable extraordinary gain of $1,381,000 or $.34 per share resulting from the exchange of common Stock for outstanding 7-3/8% Sinking Fund Debentures. Net income before the extraordinary gain was $9,784,000, or $2.44 per share. Sales for the third quarter ended Oct. 27, were $200,865,000, an increase of 8.0 percent over the third quarter of fiscal 1982. For the 39 weeks ended Oct. 27, sales were $592,900,000, up 3.1 percent over 1982 sales of $575,185,000 for the comparable period. As of the -end of the reporting period ^the Company was operating 406 stores, 21 fewer than at the same time last year.
