Add twigs of blue spruce, blue Atlas cedar, American holly, boxwood, or Hinoki cypress for interesting color and texture. Hemlock can be used for outdoor decorations, but needles will drop the next day if brought inside. Contrasting color for decoration can be supplied by the bright red berries of American, Chinese, or winterberry holly; orange berried firethom; blue berried juniper; or white berried bayberry. A low growing firethorn named “Rutgers” is resistant to scab and fireblight and is covered with bright orange berries.
