A Division of Keystone Trovel Agency Serving Members & Non Members 901 Tilton Rd. Northfield (

WASHINGTON, D C. - Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ) has urged officials of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency not to designate an ocean .incineration site off the New Jersey coast until the agency first issues comprehensive regulations governing the burning of hazardous materials at sea, and provides for a full public review process. Hughes, a member of the House Fisheries and Oceanography Subcommittees, called upon EPA to

hold off on plans to designate the site to give the public and the agency more time to evaluate the potential environmental risks of ocean incineration. The proposed site is centered 140 nautical miles east of the Delaware Bay and 155 nautical miles eastsoutheast from the entrance to New York harbor. DURING COMMITTEE hearings called at Hughes' request, the South Jersey lawmaker told the EPA “We should not rush into ocean incineration until we

know for certain that the process is technologically and environmentally

sound.”

Hughes said there, are still too many unanswered questions to rush headlong into large-scale ocean incineration operations off our coasts. The potential for environmental harm in the event of an accident or the deliberate release of toxic material from an incineration vessel in an emergency situation presents a scenario for disaster, Hughes said.

“Before going ahead with incineration at sea, we need to take a hard look at the possibility of an accident’s occurring in the transport of contaminate material. I question whether we have the resources and the technical know-how to contain such a spill in the event it occur-

red,” Hughes said.

“Before approving ocean incineration as accepted policy, we also need to know more about the longterm impact of burning hazardous materials at sea,” Hughes continued. Ji He said that atmospheric a- processes have been cited ^ as playing a role as a K source of contaminants 5 leading to the overall a- degradation of water quali-

ty in coastal areas.
