Enjoying Your Tree In Safety Watercolor
27
Enjoy your Christinas tree this year by taking a few simple steps towards a .safer holiday. According to Larry Newbold, Cape May- County Agricultural Agent, the fresher you can keep your tree, the safer it is, since the foliage cannot ignite when green and fresh. If the tree loses as much as one-fifth of its normal moisture, it becomes igni table. DON'T BE misled by the color of a tree when selecting it in a lot. It may have been sprayed with a colorant. The best indication of freshness is how flexible the branches and needles are. Test it to see if needles fall easily, and look for resin at the butt. If the needles remain on, and the butt end is sticky, chances
are you have.a fresh tree. Once the tree is picked out, take it home and cut about one inch off the butt to increase water absorp: tion. Stand the tree in a bucket of water, and keep it in a cool room, garage or in a protected spot outdoors. If stored for l week or more, saw off another inch before trimming it. Bring the tree in for only a few days if you can, and keep it in a sturdy holder with adequate water at the base. 4 WHEN PLACING your tree indoors, be sure to keep it away from heat sources, such as a radiator or fireplace. Be sure all your lights and connections are safe to use — check them every year before and after holiday use. Turn off lights before retiring or

going out. When using an artificial tree, try to select one that is flame retardent, and be sure to follow the same precautions described for real trees. Santa Visits Upper Seniors STRATHMERE - NearJy 90 Upper Township Senior Citizens gathered at The Deauville Inn, Dec. 10 for an annual Christmas party. After enjoying a delicious dinner, the group was visited by Santa Claus, who gave out presents. (Some members thought Santa Claus looked a lot like Capt. Jerry Nelson of Seaville but most were sure it was Santa himself.) The group usually holds its Christmas party at The Upper Township Senior Citizen Center in Palermo but the large crowd felt that a sit-down dinner at The Deauville would better accommodate them. The holiday party concluded with the singing of Christmas carols.
