Lighting Contest Winners Announced
The best private home display of Christmas lights and decorations in Cape May City is that of Mr. & Mrs. Wister H. Dougherty, 1312 Maryland avenue, in the judgement of the Christmas Lights Committee of the Vintage Homes Association. A spectacular wreath with lights as well as lighted trees and phrubs around the house made the display the winner. Second place was the display of the T.J. Gilmartins of 1001 Cape May . Avenue, with white lights on shrubs and red candles in the windows, ilie Sea House, at 200 Madison Avenue, the home of Bonnie Reina and Bud and Margaret Jones, was the third prize winner in the private home category, with white candles in every window as well as several trees on the porch and indoors visible from the outside. Of special mention, according to the judges, is the home of Paul and Karen Andrus, 223 Perry Street, for the best Victorian decorations, with few lights and extensive
use of greenery and ribbons. The best small house display was that of Anthony Cristanti and Barbara Von Colin at 1211 Lafayette Street. Other winners of certificates of merit are C.A. (Bud) Swain 3rd, 1087 Michigan Avenue; Mary Reilly, 1 *'2 9 Washington Street; Jerry & Tony Rainone, 818 Washington Street; Mr. & Mrs. Harry Gilbert, 1308 Maryland Avenue; -David and Irene Dixon, 725 Columbia Avenue; Fred & Diane Coldren« 1310 Franklin Street; and Gerd Tolley. 450 West Perry Street, for the most outstanding tree lights. In the business category, the first prize winner is McDowell's Gallery on * Washington Street Mall with windows bordered in gold tinsel and lights, lights highlighting the architectural details and trees in the windows. Second prize goes to The Whale’s Tale, also on Washington Street Mall, with greens and window lights as well as white lights in the trees outside

the shop. Tiki’s Treasures wins third place with extensive use of white lights emphasizing their corner location at the end of Washington Street Mall. A special mention goes to Love’s Fudge for an attractive window display in a shop that is closed at this time of year; the judges were most impressed with this effort, which included a sleeping Bear in a brass bed framed in lights, and hoped other shopkeepers not open at this holiday time of year might consider decorations in the future. Certificate of merit winners in the business catgegory were Patricia Jackson’s Jewelery Shop on Carpenter Lane and Stumpo’s Pizza, also on Carpenter Lane. In the accommodations category, the first prize winner is the Star Hitch, John and Lillian Daly, 609 Columbia Avenue, for an outstanding scene in their enclosed porch as well as use of lights outlining doors and windows. The Delsea, 621 Columbia, Rosemary Stumpo and Suzanne Littell, wins second prize for their imaginative use of white lights on their porch, even to outlining a Victorian wicker swing. Third prize is won by the Hanson House, Vera and A1 Hanson. m Ocean Street, with colorful lights in the shape of a tree and outlining their porch. Certificate of merit
winners in the accommodations category are The Brass Bed. 719 Columbia Avenue, John & Donna Dunwoody; Captain Mey’s Inn. 202 Ocean Street,, Carin Federman and Milly LaCanfora; Columbia House, 26 Ocean Street, Maggie Fenton and Roger Crawford; and the Royal Villa, 22 Ocean Street, Seth and Joyce Snover. Special Commendations go to the City of Cape May for the lovely decorations and lights on the Washington Street Mall and at the Rotary Bandstand, and the Cape May Fire Department for the outline lights on the new Victorian Fire Museum. The U.S. Coast Guard Training Center will receive a Special Commendation for the lights from the bell tower of the chapel in the shape of a Christmas tree, and the Coast Guard Center Alert will receive a Special Commendation for their lights on the ship, which adds a festive feeling to the Cape May harbor. Finally, the City of West Cape May will also receive a Special Commendation for the colored lights across Broadway which makes entering the area so festive. Cash prizes will be awarded . the first place winners in each category, with money contributed by the Greater Cape MayChamber of Commerce and

COLD SPRING - Lower Cape May Regional High School inadvertently eliminated a number of students from its recentlypublished list of first quarter honor students. “For some reason, all the students who had study hall got a zero,” a school spokeswoman said of the computer company foulup That error has now been corrected.
